I've Got a Secret... a Secret Secret

Almost another inch of rain last night - too bad most of it came while I was sitting on the 4th teebox at Oaks Summit last night! I was already up 2-0 in match play on the guy I was paired up to play when the rain came down heavily. Not playing the best golf of my life, but playing well enough to be winning! My golf clubs, clothes, and even Cy the Coolest Head Cover EVER are all dried out this morning! More golf tonight if the weather holds up.

As much as I don't care for Kobe, his request for a trade (or maybe not... depends on the day and his mood) makes me wonder how much more competitive the Timberwolves would be if they had someone else to help carry the burden that KG is not able to do on his own. How many Championships are won by a team with only one All-Star anymore? It wouldn't be a match made in heaven, but any help for the T-wolves is desired. Problem is I don't think they have anyone worth trading to the Lakers.

Today's "World No Tobacco Day" around the world - so put away your carton of cigarettes, your pipes, and even the cigars for a day. Not sure what the purpose is since most people on cigarettes will still give in. As long as they don't have a "World No Blog Page Day", I should be safe on everything else.

I did forget to mention one of the best things to happen on my birthday this past weekend.... we were at Church Sunday morning and my 3 year old friend Payton went to the front of the church for the children's sermon. It was Penticost Sunday (Holy Spirit came to the Deciples and essentially formed the Church - so it was the "Church's Birthday" as well) and the start of the children's sermon asked "who's birthday is it today?" and Payton was looking right at me from the front. He said "Adam" and was correct! THAT-A-WAY PAYTON!!! Gave us all a good laugh.

Not much else comes to mind today... Enjoy the last of May, bring on the Summer months!

Entertainment of the Day - Thanks for getting this song stuck in my head Pat! An interesting video of Mr. Roboto. I don't mind Styx, but this song isn't my favorite of theirs. Here's the old Cartman version of Come Sail Away.... good laughs.

Already Wednesday

I like shortened weeks like this. Already "humpday" and I'm not tired of work yet!

So my nerdish qualities may come out today - but make sure you read the whole thing before you judge me on that. I recorded two shows on the History Channel on Monday night that were in sync with the 30 year anniversary of Star Wars. I watched the first one last night which was Star Wars Tech which talks about the extreme science of the space movie and asks how realistic is it. For anyone who is a fan of science or technology, this show spends an hour examining the realistic possibilities of what George Lucas put into his movie. I was a little disappointed with the first part which had scientists acting disappointed in the movie since there would be no sound in space of ships flying by, no explosions with no oxygen in outer space, and no smoke when a ship gets blown up. Fine, I kind of already knew that. But how far away are real droids? Not as far away as you think. My favorite part was when they showed how the robotic hands of both Darth Vador and Luke are already being used. Currently they have 5 different motions controlled by brain waves, but within a couple of years, prosthetic hands will have 25 different motions all controlled by brain and upper arm muscle movement. They also talk about Plasma and how it could be used in the future to develop the "la-sers" that are used, or even a light saber..... pretty interesting and I recommend it! I also taped the Star Wars: The Legacy Revealed which is 2 hours and I'll start it tonight. I think this one focuses less on the science behind the movie as it does the story of Good vs Evil.

Mario Party 8 is out for the Wii and next on my "purchase" list once I get time to do more shopping. Looks like there are a lot of mini games to play with 4 people... and now that I have 4 Wiimotes.... Good times by all! Any other games to recommend? I did do some Mario Cart 64 last night and I can beat all 4 cups now at 50cc.... working my way up to the grand master 150cc - give me some time! Stupid Penguins keep getting in my way.

The American Men fared 0-8 in the first round of the French Open! Wow - not too good guys! Big upsets for some, not so big for others - but now they can focus on the grass court season ahead. French Open is always the hard one since there are so many clay court specialists and it's such a different surface than the other ones (grass and hardcourt mainly). That's why you see some of the greatest of all time having never won the French Open (Sampras and Federer... for now). Makes Agassi's accomplishment so much more unique.

Haiku of the Day
Ending month of May
Enter the heat of summer
Ready for the Fall

Entertainment of the Day - I watched Epic Movie which is another movie spoof - this one focusing on The Chronic (WHAT?!?)-als of Narnia but glimpses of other movies. Has Kumar in it and there was even a quick mention of his White Castle movie! It's funny if you're in that mood for something strange but make sure you catch all the other movie references - some are subtle.

Weblink of the Day - No wonder Miss USA didn't win the Miss Universe Pageant.... she slips and falls on live TV!!!! Funny!

30 Down and 30 to Go

Happy Birthday Matt!

It was a birthday weekend with lots of typical Memorial Day grilling. Ma and Pa came to visit for a few days and the weather decided to finally start feeling like summer. I said goodbye to my "20 somethings" and I am now officially "old". It did cause me to reflect on what I've done in the 30 years I've now been on this earth and realized there is still so much I want to do. So I now give you my next list to try to cross things off of. Check back in 30 years and see how I'm doing:

30 things I want to do in the next 30 years that I didn't do in my first 30 years:
  1. Run a 5k and a 10k run... maybe more?
  2. "Disappear" to New Zealand for 2 weeks
  3. Publish something - my daily "publish post" on my blog doesn't count nor do letters to the editor
  4. Parachute out of a perfectly good airplane
  5. Have a pet of my own - non-fish
  6. Race an overnight package via car on it's delivery somewhere over 1500 miles
  7. Travel to the Southern Hemisphere
  8. Spend time on each continent except Antarctica... no desire to go there
  9. Watch part of each of the 4 major tennis tournaments [for those wondering, that'd be Australian Open, French Open (Paris), Wimbledon (London-ish), and US Open in NYC]
  10. See my Cyclones in a New Years Day Bowlgame
  11. ProBowl trip to Hawaii (NFL)
  12. Witness an Elephant in it's native environment
  13. See an Opera at the NY Met
  14. Go to the top of many more of the newest Skyscrapers going up currently
  15. Partake in all of the following in their "local" celebrations
    • Oktoberfest in Germany
    • Carnival in Brazil
    • Chinese New Year in China
    • St. Patrick's Day in Ireland
  16. World Cup in host country
  17. Olympics in host country (non-US)
  18. Star Wars Marathon (Episode 1-6 in one day) - yeah, I'm a nerd like that.
  19. Beat Super Mario Brothers 1 (can't get past 8-2 but haven't tried in the "new" era)
  20. See and pet a live manatee
  21. Be able to do at least one unassisted chinup/pullup
  22. Witness and touch Lord Stanley's Cup
  23. More Brewery Trips - still need to get to Coors (Colorado), New Belgium (Colorado - think of Fat Tire), Leinenkugels (Wisconsin), and many many microbreweries around the world.
  24. Figure out how to water ski without breaking something (either rope, boat, jetski, or me)
  25. Attend a New Year's Day Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic
  26. Play golf on a private course usually reserved for "good" players. And not lose more than 9 golf balls on the course
  27. Go on a whale watching trip in Alaska
  28. Finally get Britney to call me back... instead of her lawyer or the police with the latest restraining order
  29. Watch a full live performance of Wagner's Ring Cycle (Der Ring des Nibelungen - a 15 hour performance usually taking 3-4 days)
  30. Finish visiting all of the Guggenheim Modern Art Museums (still need to get to Venice, Bilbao, Berlin and coming soon - Guadalajara and Abu Dhabi)
Haiku of the Day
Another year past
New bubble to fill in now
"30 to 40"

Entertainment of the Day - I went a little old school this weekend with some of my movie watching - and what better way to do this than Enter the Dragon which was the final full movie of Bruce Lee. 1973 Kung Fu type movie with the incredible Bruce Lee who is very crafty in his styles of fighting. As I was reading about the movie, there is a lot of speculation that the "opponents" in the movie would really fight Bruce Lee in the scene to try to prove themselves to the great Bruce Lee. Lee ended up breaking a guy's teeth and a couple of other injuries since he felt some of them were crossing the line into reality with their fighting. He came out a winner everytime (no surprise). A very young Jackie Chan is also in this movie.

Memorial Random Thoughts

Today is the 30th anniversary of the release of Star Wars. 30 years later, it's still a hit - still defines some people as "nerds" and after release, rerelease, 6 total episodes (name one other movie with 6 installments to do as well.... Police Academy doesn't come close), started a revolution in pop culture that is rarely matched (think of all the references in other movies, tv shows, books... however subtle they may be). One of the things I've enjoyed about Star Wars is it's universal theme of Good vs Evil. If you're up for a good read, check out The Power of Myth which is an interview by Bill Moyers of mythologist expert Joseph Campbell. It talks about how every religion, from the ancient Egyptians, Roman Mythology, to Budhism, Islam, and even Christianity are all founded on the basic concept of Good vs Evil. There are a lot of similar stories or explanations of how the world came to be shared by all the religions and faiths that it truly is amazing when pointed out. I also love the thought that 99+% of the history of humanity has believed in a higher power of some sort....... shows that people are willing to accept that there is only so much a human is capable of and there exists a higher power that has more control over everything...... and I digress - so Star Wars is another example of this with the good guys ultimately winning. Lots of Star Wars specials (making of, etc) on the History Channel this weekend if anyone's interested.

There was one thing that got me worked up last night while reading the web news.... remember the recent St. Louis Cardinals pitcher who passed away? Josh Hancock who died on April 28th, died in a car crash where it was determined that he was drunk at over twice the legal limit, he was speeding, using a cell phone, not wearing a seat belt and there was some Whacky Tobaccy found in the SUV upon investigation..... I personally label him as an "idiot" while I used to feel sorry for the family in their loss. No longer do I feel that way. Josh's father feels that he should make some easy money out of the deal so here's who he is suing (remember - this is the American Way):
  • Mike Shannon's Restaurant who served Josh even though he was already drunk. They are the main defendant in the case.
  • Eddie's Towing.... the tow truck Josh ran into when he was DRUNK
  • Jacob Hargrove... the tow truck driver
  • and of course Justin Tolar who owned the stalled car, which was being towed, which was what was hit by Josh WHO WAS DRUNK, SPEEDING, AND ON A CELL PHONE!!!
So the lesson learned of all of this is if your car breaks down, leave it on the interstate and start walking- don't want to get sued! Here's what part of the lawsuit says: The lawsuit claimed Tolar was negligent in allowing his vehicle to reach the point where it stalled on the highway and for failing to move it out of the way of oncoming traffic.

Unbelivable!

Speaking of "Unbelievable".... we have a new coach at Iowa State Football this year, now we need to fire the person responsible for the 2007 schedule! October 13th is Family Weekend vs TEXAS (in Ames). The following weekend is Homecoming vs OKLAHMOA (also in Ames). While I have confidence our team will improve this year over last year (kind of hard not to) - this is not a way to make a team play better. BRING THEM ALL ON!!!!!

And finally - this weekend is the Indianapolis 500. No, this isn't "NASCAR" but rather with Indy Cars. I've never figured out why this is the only Indy Car Race that the general population even bats an eye over. Funny part is that Danica Patrick might be the 2nd best looking female at this year's Indy race!!!!! Check out Milka Duno who qualified (starts 29th) versus Danica's start in 8th. Who are you rooting for?

Have a great weekend!!!

It's All Over

Random reactions/perspectives from the AI Finale. If you missed it, you are probably the same weird person that thinks "nobody watches hockey".
  • Gwen Stefani - Still Lip Syncing (the American Way: Cheat)
  • Kelly Clarkson - Still HOT and Still the best Idol performer overall
  • Weather Guy who interrupted Miss Clarkson's performance for a stupid Tornado warning - I'm gonna hunt you down and take my agression out on you buddy.... sleep with one eye open! You couldn't interrupt Big Bird?
  • Smokey Robinson - Still pretty kickass
  • Men's Final 6 performance - The next Backstreet Boys
  • The beatbox part was very old school and one of my favorite moments of this season.... I'm sure my folks LOVED it - Catch the "Inspector Gadget" theme in there?
  • HAILEY AND TONGUE PIERCED GINA ARE BACK!!!!
  • Gladys Knight sounds good at 63 - and not lipsyncing.... talk about "old school"
  • Tony Bennett - Still pretty darn good! Can he still play piano though?
  • David Hasselhoff was unable to make it for an encore of his crying moment from last season due to rehab.... Wish we would have seen Jerry Springer crying (almost did during Wind Beneath My Wings
  • Carrie Underwood might be the ultimate AI Hottie.... too bad I had to watch it on mute (Country)
  • The kids in the African Children's Choir were better in tune than Sanjaya!
  • Greenday - crappy song but it's Greenday, they are always fun to watch. Plus they hate Dub-ya as much as I do!!
  • How did Taylor win this thing last year? No wonder he's not selling albums
  • Ruben and Jordin had probably the best duet of the last couple years.
  • Bette Midler? Seriously? Not only is it the totally wrong genre for this show, but she really REALLY SUCKED! Blame old age (Tony did fine) if you want but she should have lip synced like Gwen. I could have used the Quad Laser right about now.
  • More Kelly is always a good thing.... Ruben singing Beatles - not so much. Hailey looking at ME saying she "needs somebody to love" and that she "WANTS somebody to love" - that's HOT! And yes, it was directly to me, not you.
  • Where's Clay? Wheeler was hoping to see his idol again.....
  • After 2 "frickin" hours (Paula said it first) -not to mention the - Jordin wins Season 6 of American Idol. Good thing I didn't tape it since the dang thing ran 10 minutes over.
  • Notice that the 2nd place is the only contestant who doesn't get to "sing" goodbye? Was hoping to hear Blake do a beatbox of CAUSE YOU HAD A BAD DAY.
So now I have to find something else to bore you with on Wednesdays (and some Thursdays). For those millions of people who read my blog from StacEyville, IA - eColi is in the water there so make sure you boil ice cubes before drinking the water. Funny, we were all within 10 miles of Stacyville on Saturday......

One More Time

A different approach tonight with the finale... I'm judging the judges - even Paula with her broken nose. Who breaks something in their body because of a dog? Kind of like slipping on the ice when your tank of a dog goes running off in the winter. Who has that happen to them?? (you know who you are)

Round 1 - Simon was honest (and I agree, Blake had the better first round), Randy is dressed like an idiot with random non-helpful comments, and Paula was as random (not to mention indecisive) as usual..... Simon in 1st, Randy 2nd, Paula 3rd.

Round 2 - Simon's comments for Blake were right on, but I really hate that song - pretty simple for Jordin. Randy kind of cheapened up on his comments (not to mention his outfit), Paula... what good is she? I think she broke her ears too. Same ranking as last time.

Round 3 - Gotta like the shot of Seacrest signing an autograph.... "Seacrest out". Randy had some good points, Paula used the word "frickin" which might have been the drugs, Simon was Simon. Paula gets 1st for her subtle swearing, Simon 2nd, Randy 3rd. BTW - Blake's 3rd round song sucked, Jordin was out of tune but the crying at the end might have "sealed the deal".

Yeah, I'm picking Jordin to win. Although as usual, Chris Daughtry had the best performance of the evening, even with his eye shadow.

Red Wings lost last night (although they made it interesting at the end) so hockey is pretty much over. Nobody cares about Ottawa and Anaheim.

So life goes on for another 7 months. Seacrest out...

Entertainment of the Day - I watched a very unusual movie recently titled "Tideland". It is a strange movie by Terry Gulliam which starts with a disclaimer about how strange it really is. Never seen a movie with a disclaimer from the producer like this. It's not the worst movie I've ever seen, but not the best either. I will give the 11 year old Jodelle Ferland props for an extremely wonderful performance in the movie. After having a very disturbing childhood and ongoing experience (where she loses both parents to drugs), she meets some interesting folks and the entire movie is seen through the eyes of a child including her dolls who she talks for. Labled as an "Alice in Wonderland" type movie but I guess I see only a little similarity.

Dreaded Matchups

Every generation, there are matchups that split our society and bring out passion from folks that is rarely seen otherwise. People will argue for hours, even days sometimes as to which is better. Given a couple of drinks, the conversation will repeat itself every 20 minutes on some of these.

and that brings us to tonight's big match up.... Blake vs Jordin face off in the FINAL American Idol of 2007. Who will win? Stay here for the prediction tomorrow morning. And if you're worried about Paula (who broke her nose over the weekend) - she is indeed going to be on the finale. Probably a little drugged up so might be VERY interesting to watch tonight....

Entertainment of the Day- I watched Date Movie this weekend which was another parody movie but staring the Flute Girl from American Pie and the Undercover Brother. It was funny in spots, but not really worth a viewing if you're not dying to see it. Anyway.

A Solution To Rising Gas Prices

Another shortened blog this morning.... most of you should be working anyways!

Wheeler suggested this article about who else is benefiting from high gas prices.... prepare to get upset.

With increasing gas prices ($3.25 this morning up from $3.13), Drew suggested we all buy mopeds and get back to basics of the 80s! I wondered, how much does a moped cost anymore? Well here's all you need to know about buying a Moped:

The GIZMO Moped is only $1000 (that's 307 gallons worth of gasoline). It is just under 50 cc, 20mph is the top speed, weighs 120 pounds and has an impressive 125 Miles per Gallon. Who needs a loud and obnoxious street bike when you can buy a loud and obnoxious moped for 1/10th the cost? Even comes in three colors (red, black, and blue) with CHROME fenders..... ooooooh.... ahhhhh.....
It's costin' ya NOT to get one!

Would be hard to carry (but not impossible) my golf clubs while riding that thing. Plus would take me 30 minutes to get to Oak Summit on that thing from my house.

Speaking of golf - not an impressive showing by myself on the golf course last night. Fundamentals are still good from the lessons last year, but need to straighten out and practice a little more this week.

Big wedding in Iowa this weekend! My list of Single Friends becomes even smaller after tomorrow's big hitchin'! It'll be fun to be with the good ol' college gang yet again (Mexico crew + even more!!). Plus I'm playing for the wedding so my bass gets practiced at least for now.

Have a good weekend!

Haiku of the Day

Such a basic concept, yes?
Why do I suck then??

Entertainment of the Day I watched a very interesting movie - The Dead Girl which went under almost every radar screen last year. It caught my eye because it has Brittany Murphy in yet another role playing a drugged up hooker type (my favorite role for her.... YEAH!!!) so of course I rented it. The plot was actually really interesting to see how 7 totally independent people are changed by the death of one girl - they don't come together, but their paths very briefly pass by each other due to this one occurance. Very well done and even though it's marked as a "thriller", there's nothing scary about this one.

Weblink of the Day - Very interesting video made with dice.... song kind of sucks, but still better than Journey.

The People's Day

Look out ladies!!! Brian is on his way back to Iowa! The ground will shake, the waves of water (or possibly corn) will part, the birds will sing, the clouds will disappear, the chorus of Angels in Heaven will sing Country as Brian steps off of that plane tonight. Good thing I have so many weddings to see Brian at, otherwise the ladies of Iowa would have nobody to look forward to!

And for those of you who are "shocked" by Melinda going home last night - don't be. Very rarely does the strongest long term performer actually win American Idol. Plus when you consider who does a bulk of the voting for American Idol, you really shouldn't be shocked. I did vote for Blake, mainly because I think he'll pull out some more original stuff for the final. No vote for Mmmm Bop.

I did like seeing Elliott Yamin back on last night's show - and did anyone else notice his NEW TEETH?????? That was very noticeable last season, how great of a singer he was but he had some messed up chops. Well they're fixed now (must be nice to have money coming in) and even on some tabloids for us to view and smile at. Plus I found him singing "Somebody to Love" by Queen from last season (for my mom - huge Queen fan and only a Season 6 AI convert). That boy was good! I forget which one made Paula ball for like an hour... I'll see what I can find later today.

Golf league "officially" starts tonight for me since I was unable to golf last week (thanks to Drew for filling in and losing a dozen golf balls instead of me). Which reminds me I better pick up a case or two of "spares" to use this year. Meadow Lakes in Rochester is tricky if you've never played it.

Found Paula crying btw - A Song for You and then watch the judges commenting at the end.

Anyways - Happy May 17th which is "Ascension Thursday" (40 days after Easter) which is traditionally held as the day when Jesus left earth to go be with God.

That's all you get today - Have a good day!

Running Low on AI

For the 5 people in the world who do NOT watch AI.... only two more weeks of this junk, then back to "normal"

Here comes that pesky number 3 again on American Idol.... thought doing three songs with three contestants (9 songs total) made it feel rushed, but there was still enough cheezy moments to forget. Randy's shirt was a little loud and isn't as easily forgettable.

Jordin - Never heard that song by Rose Royce and not sure I want to. They'll always hold the title for "best Disco song" with Car Wash. It was pretty good performance, not quite up to her full potential.

Blake - Remember my rule about not singing Sting or The Police? Still applies... BUT - Roxanne might be the one exception. Mainly because I laugh every time I hear it when I think of Eddie Murphy singing it in 48 hours. Classic classic moment!

Melinda - I still wouldn't sing Whitney.... it was ok - but I was bored enough to remember how I can't figure out where Melinda's neck is. It's curiousity, not being mean about it. Just strange....

Round 1: Melinda (10 points), Jordin (7 points), Blake (3 points)

Jordin 2 - Ok, time to be serious. At no point in a competition where you depend on votes from viewers, do you ever... EVER... NEVER EVER admit that your "favorite song of all time" is MMMmmm Bop by Hanson. I will not vote for her based on that stupid comment alone. That far exceeds any stupid comment by Kelly Hickler from last season. Don't even remember the performance, just the little dude Bob who would play that song 10-15 times on our dorm floor my sophomore year in college.... I hate that song.

Blake 2 - Ok, Blake is easily the most fun to watch on stage and that gets some votes. Stealing the show from tomorrow night's "guest" with their own song. Blake has potential to sell the most records of the three if given the right genre (which the Maroon 5 song would be the right genre to sell). Wow, Randy has the same input I do.

Melinda 2 - Nut Bush City Limits??? That's seriously a song? I thought that was just the name of the bar/restaurant in Onalaska, WI that I drive past all the time on my way to rehearsals. Still something not fitting in her performance... Melinda is a good performer, but I feel she's borderline karaoke at times with some of that.

Round 2: Blake (10 points), Melinda (7 points), Mailman (3 points), Guy at the RAC who sings in the lockerroom anything written before 1970 (2 points), The Japanese guy at Jenpachi who sings "Happy Birthday" super SUPER loud (and horribly) (1 point), Mmmm Bop Jordin (0 points).

Jordin 3 - Much better.... that's the performance that can get her to win this thing! Is the sound on Fox sounding crappy for anyone else? Not the quality of sound I would hope for week in and week out. I'd rank this in the top 3 performances of the season, along with her rendition of "Never Walk Alone" and Blake's "You Give Love". Thank you for not singing Hanson.

Blake 3 - Sir Mix a Lot? Seriously? That might be the funniest thing on AI all season. Should have sung that song for his main performance! Instead I have to be reminded how someone thought it'd be cool to do Beethoven's Fifth Symphony to Disco beat... how much drugs did y'all do in the 70s to think that was a good idea? Blake's performance? eh.... might be the reason he goes home this week.

Melinda 3 - THERE'S THE CRYING WE'VE MISSED!!! Where's Wheeler's favorite "Crying Girl"=Hailey to help make the moment even more sappy? As for Melinda - she's very good... but that song/style just won't sell the records. Nice interaction with the backup band though.

Round 3: Jordin (10 points), Melinda (7 points), Blake (3 points)

Overall: Melinda 24, Jordin 17, Blake 16

So there's my prediction... Jordin vs Melinda next week. A 4 hour marathon to see which one is still standing after the end of the 4 hours and then they get the American Idol Tiara to wear for a year.

How Random Can I Get?

I finally had to give in and turn the Air Conditioning on last night for all of 2 hours. When I came home, it was 80 degrees inside my townhouse which I was ok with.... till it went up to 83 and showed no quick signs of dropping off when I was on my evening conference call. Despite the "cold front" that came through in the middle of the night, I can't sleep at 83 degrees. So the switch came on (everything worked thankfully - hadn't tried it out yet this year... nothing has been on since beginning of April) and about 30 minutes later it was much more tollerable. Plus I was nasty sweaty while practicing last night which is never fun.

Don't get me started on the 45 mph constant wind yesterday!

American Idol is on tonight - FINAL 3!!! Also means that we're finally through another season of this junk next week. As an added bonus, Elliot Yamin returns on Wednesday night - see how he's improved over the past year. Maroon 5 also performing for anyone that is interested. Me? I'll fast forward to the final 5 minutes as usual.

BTW - Did anyone see Family Guy this past week? They had a speech where the crowd started going crazy and cheering, then they clipped over to the crying girl from AI? Yes - I found it for those that missed it. I found it pretty funny! God bless the internet!

What other random thoughts can I share today?

Today is National Chocolate Chip Day!!! Seriously - go eat Chocolate Chips I guess. In an unrelated (or possibly related for some of you sickos out there.... you know who you are) date - it's Nylon Stockings Day as well! Don't believe me? Check this out:
First introduced by the Du Pont Corporation in 1940, nylon stockings were an instant success. Billed as "stronger than steel" and "run-proof," the public was fascinated by the new synthetic material. Du Pont brilliantly promoted the new stockings from the start. On May 15, 1940, Du Pont declared "N-Day" - for the first time, all across America, nylon stockings would go on sale. Women lined up for blocks and Du Pont sold 5 million pair in that single day.
I don't think I'll celebrate either holiday unfortunately.

Are ya lost yet?

Entertainment of the Day - I finished watching The Break Up last night (on every couple of hours on HBO). It's the flick with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn when they hooked up in real life causing the end of her and Brad Pitt. The movie was interesting with it being a typical male/female relationship with typical problems (aka - guy can't read the girl, girl expects too much from the guy) and was very funny in parts. The end??? well, I won't give it away. One additional note - Jennifer Aniston was amazingly hot.... IS amazingly hot! Just thought I'd share.

Brought To You By The Number 3

There are a ton of "3" versions of movies coming out this summer. We've already been exposed to the third Spiderman - now we can expect the Summer (Part 3) to continue with Shrek 3, Oceans 13 (which is the third one, they use the "new math" way of counting), Pirates of the Carribean 3, The next movie with Jason Bourne - The Bourne Ultimatum, plus to the excitement of Drew - The Little Mermaid 3 (straight to DVD). I also did some looking around and it's even worse than you thought: The Ring 3, Resident Evil 3, Rush Hour 3, and even Starship Troopers 3 (did you even see the 2nd one?).

Which gets me thinking - what were some of the great trilogies of our time? Yeah, some movies didn't stop at 3 and made the mistake of continuing past the magical number 3 - I'll ignore those for today and list my favorite trilogies:
  1. Original Star Wars Trilogy - Duh...
  2. Austin Powers - Beyonce was the best "Powers Girl"
  3. Godfather - Ignore the 3rd one please
  4. Back to the Future - has anyone seen the 2nd one more than once?
  5. Beverly Hills Cop - Again, first 2 are the best
  6. Star Wars Prequel Trilogy - Ignore Jar Jar
  7. Matrix - Although it didn't answer the questions in the 3rd that came up after viewing the 2nd.
  8. Naked Gun - There were 1, 2.5, and 33 and 1/3 (still technically a trilogy)
  9. Scream - When modern scary movies were scary, not just overly-gory as they are now
  10. Terminator - Ignore the third
  11. Lord of the Rings - By length, more like 5 movies worth.
  12. Mission Impossible
Sadly, the following did not make the list: Smokey and the Bandit, The Santa Clause, Robocop, Major League (the 3rd was that horrible), Look Who's Talking (although it did resurrect John Travolta's career), The Addams Family, Free Willy (can only watch a jumping whale once - and didn't enjoy it the one time), and Honey I Shrunk the Kids.

As you can see, it's hard to make a good trilogy without killing the original effect with a piss-poor showing on the third movie. Which list will this summer's movies end up on????? Guess you'll just have to stay tuned.

But then I began to notice how many other instances of the number 3 were popping up all weekend:
  • Gordon won his third race of the year with all the support of my friends around the country who have decided to start cheering for the champion that he is destined to become! I know he thanks you (as do I) for all of your support.
  • American Idol is down to three this week - no more LaKisha (as again predicted here).
  • Junior and DEI seperated, causing speculation that Budweiser could now be on the Number 3 car with an Earnhardt (owned by Richard Childress who could pick up Jr in 2008). Interesting.... Another random NASCAR thought - anyone else find it funny how many more Napa commercials there are with Michael Waltrip and Dale Jarrett - neither of whom can qualify for the race week after week? Too bad for them....
  • I finished planting my flowers/plants by having to replace THREE of my daylillies which did not survive the Minnesota Winter.
  • Chicago Bulls are only down 3-1 after a poor game three. Detroit just looks that good though right now.
  • And in unrelated to the number "3" thoughts: Stamps went up yet again to 41 cents (an increase of 2 cents for those that actually knew what the rate used to be) starting today. So no more using the stamps that have the Statue of Liberty and only say "First Class Stamp" on them (no value written). Like that won't cause any confusion.

Oh, the number 3

It comes after "2"

Entertainment of the Day - I watched Alpha Dog this weekend with Justin Timberlake, and the kid from The Girl Next Door who still looks like he's in high school. It was an ok movie, but felt like it was done by kids. Supposedly based on a true story which is kind of scary if it was. Basically they kidnap a rival's brother who becomes friends with the drug gang - but they still have to knock him off in the end. Anyways.... doubt they'll make a trilogy out of this one!

Final 4

American Idol wrap on the final 4. Everyone did two performances so we were back in the rushed mode all night which I found annoying. Plus it was BeeGees night and I realize how I really don't know as many Bary Gibb songs as I thought. I recognized two only, but I actually really enjoyed the music overall. In performance order:

Melinda - I thought she did well, but she also has such a high level of expectations set every week. In comparison, she's still a natural compared to 90% of the overall competition. Judges were critical because that's what they are getting paid for.

Blake - I actually enjoyed his performances because he brings the uniqueness and appeals to the folks that will be buying American Idol records (12-30 year olds... mainly the females). I recognized this song. Plus did anyone else get a good laugh from his interesting smirk when they do the contestant "flyby" at the beginning of the show? That alone should bring him back.

LaKisha - I KNOW THIS SONG... Very nice changed rendition - I would have been scared of doing this song and trying not to sound like I was singing it at a wedding. LaKisha has an interesting and powerful voice that she can show off. While I still think she won't have the fan support to stick around, she'll still have a good record. Just don't sing anything from Dreamgirls!

Jordin - She's the tallest person on stage!! Taller than both Blake and Ryan! Definitely gets the award for "most improved" in the competition and I now think it's hers to lose. She has the AI appeal that the judges are looking for too. "Greatest female recording artist"?? I doubt it but who knows....

Melinda Take 2 - I thought her changing the lyrics to avoid saying "loser" was interesting mainly because they dwelled on it with the preview thing and in discussion... so the point of doing so was pretty much null.

Blake Take 2 - boring song, but a nice spin on it that I thought he pulled off fine.

LaKisha Take 2 - I wondered who would be the first to show signs of exhaustion of singing twice in one night (not to mention the double amount of rehearsal they have experienced in the past week) and it was definitely LaKisha. I think that fact alone will send her home this week.

Jordin Take 2 - Another one who showed signs of exhaustion at the end of her song, but I still think her first song makes her the frontrunner in this thing.

And for you non-American Idol people out there (all 5 of you in the US) - I finally got my invite for Joost which is a new internet TV program. It's pretty sweet mainly because it has a GI Joe channel and a Transformers channel where you can watch over 20 episodes of each... "on demand"!! Seriously, how cool is that. They also have a cool classical channel that I've been keeping up while working at my desk to watch some performances of Tschaikovsky's Violin Concerto and Holst's Planets. Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you an "invite" to download. Here's a full channel list to view over and convince you to try!

I'm out the rest of the week - so have a good weekend! See you on the flip side!!! BTW - I should have over 20,000 hits in the next day or two! That's pretty amazing when you think about it. It's the same 30 or so folks per day and I thank all of you for returning daily to hear my pointless ramblings.

Late and Nothing in Particular to Say

Red Wings looked awesome last night in their 2-0 win. Some amazing defense that helped them win, plus a shut-out on the road will help boost their confidence moving into the next round against Anaheim. This means the return of Pronger vs. the Wings! Anaheim has looked good but they've also had a lot of time off - Wings in 5.

Preeclampsia Walk-a-Thon this Saturday at various locations. I'll be walking in the Minneapolis edition at 10am if anyone is "in the neighborhood" and wants to join me. Or look into walking at a location near you.

American Idol final four perform tonight - and doing some music of the Bee Gees! I love disco night but not sure who's going to give us the best show. The early Vegas line is that LaKisha will be next to go but it's also safe to say that all of the final four will record and release a record.

Another interesting development with Apple/iTunes and the recording industry. So yet again the music execs want more money so they are trying to encourage Apple to up their prices from the 99 cents they currently charge. In the past, Apple and Steve Jobs have always said "no way" and that's that. This time, Jobs is saying "we might consider it, but in doing so - let's make the files all standard format", rather than the encrypted .m4p files or whatever the iTunes files are. From a business perspective, Apple would gain more non-iPod customers if the files are straight downloadable .mp3 files (which they should be in many people's opinions). As a customer, you wouldn't have to worry about "converting" the files into MP3 that way. There used to be programs (the non-legal type) that would do it for you, but the "other" way is to burn a CD which converts the files into a .WAV file - then just use your local favorite rip to MP3 software. I think it shows that Apple is trying to protect the users from the evil recording industry. Some readers who's name starts with "K" and rhymes with "Kahn" may think Apple is the evil one here, but I think you're just misguided. Apple had little choice of the format for iTunes if they wanted to get the support of the recording industry. There, that's my soapbox of today.

I will be gone Thursday and Friday - at a Graduation in Davenport. So tomorrow's AI update/opinion will be my last blog of the week.

Entertainment of the Day - Despite being harrassed with Steve Perry and Journey a lot of yesterday (JOURNEY SUCKS!!) - today's entertainment is a non-Journey one though. I watched Charlotte's Web the remade one this past weekend. It was what you'd expect from a remake - not the cartoon one. It was ok, but the best part was the extra that talked about how they made the movie. The only characters who were computerized were Timpleton the Rat, and Charlotte herself. Otherwise they trained the pigs to do all the things that Wilber did in the movie. After watching it and discovering how trainable pigs are, I think it'd be pretty cool to have one as a pet like my cousin Jimmy had.

Happy Siete de Mayo!!

Couple of Random Thoughts to share this morning:
  • Spiderman 3 took the weekend box-office crown which was no surprise to anyone I'm sure. Smashing records but that's not the part that gets me. So Spidey pulled in $148 million for the weekend. In 2nd place was the old champ Disturbia at a mere $5.7 million. That's less than 4% of the other one. So basically anyone who went to see a movie this weekend was for Spiderman and the only other people that went to a movie were the ones that couldn't get tickets because they showed up late so were stuck watching something else. I just see that as a monster difference between 1st and 2nd place. It isn't quite as amazing to see the records fall considering almost every theatre raises their ticket prices every year. Still a lot of money.
  • Paris Hilton got her new boob job just in time to go to prison next month. She's trying to get out of it (of course) but I'm not sure she will considering how she blatantly disregarded her probation - MULTIPLE TIMES. The other ladies in prison will love to meet her acquaintance I'm sure. But she does fire her publicist after all of this considering it was he that told her it was ok..... I know that's the first person I'd ask about anything that dealt with legal rulings. The best was a letter from one fan to Governor Arnold asking for Divine Austrian Intervention stating: “She provides hope for young people all over the U.S. and the world. She provides beauty and excitement to (most of) our otherwise mundane lives,”..... This is Paris we're talking about her right? Sounds more like someone describing Lassie. Was Lassie a girl?
  • Rocket returns to the Yankees - could they give us any more reason to hate them? I was just starting to feel indifferent towards the guy and he goes and does this. Doesn't hurt him either to have a pro-rated contract of $28 million.
  • Red Wings won decisively on Saturday and didn't even give up 2 goals in this one. Game 6 tonight to hopefully finish this series out and move on to Anaheim.
  • Twins game from Friday night - a very non-exciting game that the Twins lost (yet again)! My record for attending Twins games at the dome and watching them win is very very poor.
  • Gas prices continue to rise. Meanwhile I'm looking at how to get the official title "Oil Expert" so I can state whatever I want and influence gas prices. Saying things like "Gas will be below $2" (It was there for less than a month) or "$3 is past us" or even the most recent one "Gas prices will be highest in middle of May" which all of us know will not remain true. I'll see what I can come up with and I'll try to make my statements a little more profound.
  • Here's a public video demo by Mercury Computers using the IBM Cell Processor.... this thing is amazing and is getting a lot of excitement generated around here.

Entertainment of the Day - I saw Dreamgirls this weekend and thought it was very well done. Yes, it's pretty obvious why Jennifer Hudson won the supporting actress award too after watching it. Her song "Love You I Do" was quite incredible. Only surprise was that Eddie Murphy had the role he did with that much singing when Jamie Foxx has the much better voice. I would have considered swapping those two actors - I didn't consider Eddie's performance as Oscar-worthy.

Don't Hassel the Hoff

Those crazy Canadians are back at it with a 220.5 pound weighing COIN.... yeah, that's right - a coin for your piggy bank that weighs more than you do.... or at least most of you! 21 inches in diameter even! What is unusual in that article is how it has a $1 million face value (in Canadian which is like $5 million US), it's actually worth twice that using the current price in gold and that it's 99.99 percent pure gold! So why do this? Remember this is the same country that gave us Celine Dion, Alex Tribeck, and Barenaked Ladies!

Golden State bumps Dallas and the annoying combo of Mark Cuban/Dirk No-longer-playing-itzky out of the NBA playoffs! That's almost as good as the Bulls winning the whole thing! Any sports TV analyst who said that they predicted this is lying - while it isn't surprising looking back, everyone thought this was the year for Dallas. I did stay up to watch the whole game which finished close to midnight last night... luckily the late games are almost over with for both NBA and NHL.

Other quick random thoughts:
  • Spiderman 3 opens today - I'll see it on DVD:) As is usual with my movie viewing preference.
  • Richmond race this weekend in what should have been the "BJ Pitzen 400" but I didn't win - I seriously would have named it that. Instead it's "Jim Stewart is lame 400". I'll predict TONY Stewart as the winner just because he's due and he does well at Richmond. It'll be the first non-win for Hendrick in a COT race.
  • Red Wings play Saturday, then again on Monday.
  • Have you seen the David Hasselhoff drunk video yet? I'm looking for the "extended version" without much success yet....
  • Here's the "extra" from The Pursuit of Happyness where they show off the crazies and their fascination with the Rubiks Cube. I want to be one of these Crazies!!! The blindfold one is the most impressive!
  • Sunday at 12:34 am - it will be 12:34 on 05/06/07... go celebrate!
Off to Twins Game tonight - GO TWINS!!! Have a great weekend!

Entertainment of the Day - One of the other weird things I've always wanted to learn to do is the pen twirl thing... in high school we called it the "Debater's Twirl" since all the debaters did it all the time. So here's a video to teach you and yes, I "practiced" for about 5 minutes yesterday and who knows, I may get it down yet.

A Tall Order

Go Red Wings! They (barely) won last night with a miracle needed. Who says pulling the goalie doesn't work?

And Chris and Phil go home on Idol - as was predicted here yesterday. The early Vegas line has LaKisha going home next (remember, there's only 4 left and my "other" prediction today is that all 4 will record albums).

So I've always had a fascination with skyscrapers - mostly at how impressive they have become and continue to get higher and more "modern" looking. I am not a huge fan of heights but I do enjoy going up on observation decks and seeing everything you can see from the top of these mammoth buildings.

I found an article yesterday that talks about some of the newer skyscrapers going up around the world and there is the incredible Burj Dubai building that is planned for completion in late 2008. Here's an image of what got my attention perked "real quick" when I was at their webpage:

I have always enjoyed seeing Taipai 101 which was the record holder at 508 meters... well now Burj Dubai will be in at a whopping 808 METERS!!! This does of course include a 540 foot antenna/spiral on top. For anyone doing the math, that will be a 60% increase over the current record holder! That's an incredible way to beat a record of such magnitude. Some rumor webpages say that there are now plans on building it to be over 1000 meters tall (a 100% increase).

Another interesting building, while not as tall and in a different "non-oil" part of the world - the Millennium Tower World Business Center is being built in Busan, South Korea will be 560 meters when completed... interesting picture of it found here.

I still brag about how the CN Tower in Toronto is the tallest freestanding structure in the world (not a "building" so not on the skyscraper list) and has the highest elevation for public toilets (don't think I used them... will do next time I'm there). I can say "I've been there and had dinner at the top of the thing!). 553 meters tall if you were wondering (observation deck at 446 meters).

So was that worth the wait? Tonight is the first night of golf league at Meadow Lakes here in Rochester - Tomorrow is Friday... life is good!

My Dad Owns a Dealership....

It was Bon Jovi night on American Idol.... only thing better would have been "Rush Night" on American Idol!!! (sarcasm) Sorry, never been a big Bon Jovi fan and after the show tonight, I'M STILL NOT (Sorry Jessi). And for the enjoyment of the privileged few who can keep up with my ramblings, I'll mix as many ATHF quotes in as possible today for no apparent reason (you're already one behind).

The band was pretty good (as always... can they get an award for that or something?) Plus it's always nice to see Tongue Stud Gina in the audience! It's about time that they pulled out a successful theme night this season with a reasonable critique. I'm still not a fan of Bon Jovi (that's BJ for short) - I'd rather be in the garage hanging sheet rock or something.... I'm a MAN'S MAN!!! In performing order:

Phil was actually pretty good. The "Steve Perry" reference from Randy won't help his cause at all. JOURNEY SUCKS!!! My dad does own a dealership though dude... he's TOTALLY loaded!

Jordin - That wasn't very good at all but I think she'll be back (and possibly win the thing). I am jealous of the guy who gets to do the vocals "woah oh woah" or whatever... that was cool.

LaKisha - I'm impressed. Hope she has enough fans to keep her around this week though. If she goes home, she'll still sell a record... or two.

Blake - That was really cool and yes, he gets my vote tonight! Donkey Puncherello votes for him too! Blake has to be one of the more original guys in recent AI history and for that alone, he should stick around a couple of weeks yet.

Chris - Nothing original, nothing horrible... but it was good enough to go home this week.

Melinda - probably still her competition to lose. While not her comfort zone, she still showed why she'll be around for a while and why she's been the favorite from the get go.

Two to go home???? I pick Phil and Chris but wouldn't put it past seeing LaKisha going home - just doesn't have the appeal of the others. PARTY DUDE!!!

And my opinion of American Idol dropped significantly after they showed Dumya's message. What a moron. And speaking of that idiot - just want to remind everyone and congratulate everyone on the four year anniversary of "Mission Accomplished". In the words of Bush himself: "Major combat operations in Iraq have ended." Interesting interesting.....

Red Wings play the late game again tonight to try to even up the series at 2-2. GO WINGS!!!

Entertainment of the Day - I watched The Pursuit of Happyness recently and I really enjoyed the movie. It's sad, but makes you feel good about yourself and inspired to take on the world. I thought The Fresh Prince was really good, as was his real life son. The days of "Parents just don't understand" are long behind us but still a strong memory. Strongly recommended movie!

An Unusual List

Happy May Day!!! Today's the day where we put paper bags of dog doodoo on front doors, light it on fire, then ring the door bell and RUN!!! I think that's what we do today... I'll have to make sure I don't answer the door if it rings today.

So I have many friends who are determined to "set me up" and constantly ask me... "what type of woman are you looking for". So today I attempt to answer that question in a unique way. I present to you my list of 10 of my favorite cartoon women of all time!! • Is actually blue
Princess Adora (from He-Man/She-Ra)
Pros:
  • Has royalty for parents and her twin brother's friggin' He-Man!!
  • Actually led the "bad guys" before understanding true identity... has a "bad girl" side to her
Cons:
  • Spent first 19 years of her life "kidnapped" and probably didn't lead a normal childhood
  • Her brother could kick my butt... but only "by the power of Grayskull"

Hayley Smith (from American Dad)
Pros:
  • Is more liberal than I am

That's all you get today - and yes, I watch way too many cartoons, even as a grown adult.
