Free Stuff

I donated platelets this morning and since it was my 4th donation of 2007, I received a free SWEATSHIRT!!!! What a great present to get in late June as we head into the summer months. I believe that if I go back next week and donate again I get the free stocking cap (available in orange or camouflage colors) and winter gloves (good to -30C). I know, I should be thankful for free stuff - just find it ironic.

And as June comes to a close, look around at all the "specials" going on since it's end of quarter. We see it here at IBM - but look at the Car Dealerships with "amazing deals" that seem to get even better at end of the quarter (which ends at midnight on the 30th of June for those who don't deal with these things regularly). Chipotle has specials like "Free T-Shirt", or some clearance sales at furniture stores. Pay attention from now till the end of September - major purchases sometimes have larger benefits to wait till the final week of the quarter. But it also can bite us, notice how gas shot up 15 cents? I bet it drops off again on Monday. Need to get that last push to finish the quarter with strong profits.... I could write a book on this stuff.

By the way - I do sincerely apologize for the duplicate movie listing. I remember using that one last week now:) My short term memory kicking in again. Short attention span, same thing!

Should be nice weather in Minnesota/Iowa for the weekend! Good golfing weather (hint, hint)! Not sure what it's doing for my millions (AND MILLIONS) of readers out in the Philadelphia or San Francisco areas. I should go look again at where all of my readers are. Some in Arizona yet? If you are somewhere with bad weather, remember that Wimbledon is wrapping up the first week with some good tennis. Next week should be an exciting week to watch (yeah, while at work for some of us) on both the men's and women's side.

NBA Draft was pretty uneventful last night. Portland pretty much is creating a new team - and KG is still a T-wolf... for now:) Let's hope he stays!!! Give him a new iPhone for free without having to wait in line for 2 weeks like the other idiots out there:)

Have a great weekend! For those with enough vacation to take next week off, you're lucky! I will be working (and covering for many many many people around here) all of next week (sans Wednesday). I may be adding a "SURPRISE" this weekend to my blog page, among some cosmetic changes since I'm anticipating a slower week next week.

Entertainment of the Day - Haven't had time to watch movies, or really listen to any music - so you get a game here today! Memorize the map, click on the thing that looks like the north star, then get to the black hole without hitting any blocks. You'll figure it out. Use only the mouse (or joystick, or Nintendo Power Glove if you still have one of them).

I Would Rather Be....

20 Things I would rather be doing today than here at work:
  1. Golfing with my "new and improved" golf swing
  2. Shooting Clay Pigeons
  3. Flying a kite... not sure the last time I did that - 1980-something probably.
  4. Attending another wedding in Puerto Vallarta, or just relaxing in Puerto Vallarta
  5. Drinking with Lindsay Lohan.... oops, nevermind
  6. Parachuting out of an airplane
  7. Singing the National Anthem for a Major League Game
  8. Las Vegas baby!!!
  9. Driving a convertible Mini across country
  10. Waiting in line to see Transformers - not because I'm nerdy, but because I REALLY don't want to be here today
  11. Reading the Stephen King book that has been staring at me for the past 7 months... wish it wasn't so thick.
  12. Cat shopping
  13. Attending another U2 concert - front row of course as usual
  14. Twins game..... 12:10 today!!! I'll drive if anyone's game!
  15. Catching some sun and getting rid of my farmer's/golfer's tan
  16. Playing with little kids at the children's hospital
  17. Shopping on ebay.... wait, I do that everyday!
  18. Practicing the accordion, or guitar
  19. Godfather Movie Marathon
  20. Swimming in the ocean.... how "standard" is that response?
Yeah.... it's gonna be a long day:(

Haiku of the Day -
Go enjoy the sun
Soon it will be way too hot
Anything but work

Entertainment of the Day - I watched the new version of Bridge to Terabithia this weekend. I remember the book as a kid and being sad when the girl gets it. Yes, movie was aimed for kids and was kind of cute - plus it had the Zoey girl from The Elf. Anyway, movie wasn't as much of the tearjerker as I remember the book being.

USBC

The Brews Brothers (and Drew) have left for Reno for the USBC tournament!!! No, USBC does not stand for any of the following:
  • United States Barista Championship
  • Uniform Statewide Building Code
  • United States Breastfeeding Committee
  • United States Bordeaux Corporation
  • US Bankruptcy Court
  • Upper Stratton Baptist Church
  • maybe United States Bridge Championships.... never know with those guys.
USBC is the US BOWLING Championship. Yes, bowling is for girls and everyone there will be required to wear skirts. Best wishes to them and hopefully no bail money is required to be taken from the slush fund.

The KG rumor mill is still churning. One thing is clear, neither Kevin nor the T-Wolves management think he'll be around next year. So they're attempting to get the Power Forward Jack from some teams.... and his teammate, Shooting Guard Shite. Next will start the rumors that the team is moving to Dallas - oh wait, that was the hockey team from Minnesota.

Wimbledon is under way and the American Men actually had wins in the first round (unlike last month in Paris)! Not sure why they actually play the tournament when Federer has no signs of slowing down. His numbers at Wimbledon are ridiculous: 4 straight championships (favorite to win his 5th straight). In the past 4 title runs, he's only lost 5 SETS!!! that averages to 1.2 sets per year. There are 7 rounds to win, so basically he wins 21 sets of tennis and drops 1.2 sets per year. That's simply incredible. Not even Tiger can brag that kind of dominance in an individual sport. And his time on court average is under 2 hours.... another baffling stat. And for the sports fans who have ESPN on all the time (as it is at my house), any talk about greatest athletes of 2006 needs to start with Federer and stop with Tiger. When you speak of the difficulty of individual sports such as tennis and golf, you can't bring in any individuals from team sports into the discussion. Think about it......

Other news items?
  • iPhone.... too much hype
  • Paris out of jail..... that was SOOOO yesterday
  • Tony Blair bid's adieu.... if only Bush would leave too
  • My calf muscle pop from Monday feels better today. No more limp but still tender for some reason.

Haiku of the Day -
Change is a good thing
Get out of your comfort zones
Bye Bye Tony Blair

Entertainment of the Day - I finally got to You, Me, and Dupree this past weekend. Pretty funny movie and not as bad as I had heard from some other people. I usually don't like Owen Wilson but he was ok. Funny how the movie situation actually became real life for a recently married friend from St. Ansger!!!

Karma - The Bad Version

Bad Karma Day yesterday... not sure what I did but it came in a big wave! Only has room to get better right?

Here are some very quick (and short) thoughts for today. I'm meeting and hosting with a customer in about an hour so have a ton of stuff to do to get ready for that.
  • I reread the Stephen King short story 1408 which is also the movie with John Cusack that everyone is seeing. The story is pretty good, but not very long. Probably take you 1/2 the time of the movie to read the actual story but that's Hollywood for you. Not his best work, and not even the best story in Everything's Eventual (the book it's from).
  • Office Space was on E! last night - too bad it's edited beyond belief and there are parts that are no longer funny when edited for TV. "Heck... Lundberg had her" (and no reference to "Oh Face"). Also, the one piece of flare was removed. But what a classic movie even at 8 years old! Too many parts of that movie remind me of my job.
  • For the wrestling fans of old.... Chris Ben-oit killed his wife, son, and then himself this weekend.... not something anyone could see coming! Another tragedy to the WWE!
  • After a bad day, is there anything better than Family Guy? Last night even had the Rocketman skit which ranks very high in my favorite Family Guy Moments.... Don't get the reference? Here's the original from 1978 with William Shatner....
  • Paris is out (take 2) - She'll be on Larry King tonight because EVERYONE should be interviewed by Larry King when you get out of prison. My hunger strike is now officially finished....
Have a great Tuesday!!

Lots of Hot Air

Rochesterfest has come and gone till next year. I did finally participate in an aspect of the festivities on Saturday with the "Hot Air Balloon Race" that happened twice that day - once at 6:30am and once at 7pm. My best friend for the weekend, Oso, and I went to the park to watch 17 hot air balloons go up. Oso was more concerned with who had his tennis ball than the balloons, but he was patient while I watched them unroll the balloons, then inflate (they do about 75% of the inflation using a large fan.... then they pour out the heat to get the balloon to finally rise off the ground), then take off! It was pretty neat to be about 15 yards from the balloons as they were going up. There is about a 5 second window is all when the basket is about a foot off of the ground where if you're going up, you better be in the basket and if you're not going, GET OUT!!! Make sure to take your lotion to keep your skin moisturized so in the span of 5 seconds you better "Put the lotion in the basket". Sorry, I couldn't help myself....

The most impressive part of the experience was the appearance of the Energizer Bunny Hot "Hare" Balloon. It's the largest balloon in the US and makes a regular cycle of visits. The ears on this thing are as big as the other balloons!!! It was seriously one of the more impressive things I've seen in a while. Drew and I always joked about getting the 30 foot inflatable Santa for the front yard around the Holidays.... screw that, get the 166 foot inflatable Energizer Bunny and the whole town will be able to see it!!! It even had it's own crew (about 15 of them) of "Bunny Crew" wearing pink shirts to help hold the thing down. "Up, Up and A-WAAAA-AAAAY... in my beautiful, my beautiful... BA-LOOOOOON!!!" (sing along with me)

An important lesson was learned yesterday in California's NASCAR race.... you need gasoline in order to cross the finish line! Luckily it happened to the right driver and we do not have to listen to Jill brag again. Carl should have just called Drew to come with the gas tank - that's what I do when I run out of gas..... on 37th street.... over the lunch hour.... it happens.

There are some very cheap packages to fly from Rochester to Las Vegas. Only $69 one way and the rooms are cheap as well - Mainly because it's dang hot in Vegas right now!!! But still, very tempting to go out for 4 nights for $350 (including airfare and room)!!! That's at NYNY too!

Haiku of the Day -
Hot Air Required
Tons of that around here
Refocus that air

Entertainment of the Day - I watched a bunch of movies this weekend.... the first was The Messengers which was a respectable "scary" movie about a family who moves to North Dakota (I know - it already sounds "scary" as well as "fictional" just based on the thought of moving to North Dakota) to start a sunflower farm. The teenage girl and 2 year old boy see things in the house that the adults don't see. So the movie was ok, but I'm still not exactly sure why it was called "The Messengers".... seriously.

Top 100 Movies - The Non-AFI Version

New baby Fink - congrats!!!

Root Canal went as well as can be expected. I do NOT want another one of those in this lifetime - just have to keep the cavities away and since that one was my only one, I'm back to zero to worry about for now. I do have to say that it was the most pain I've experienced in a long time, mainly because I've lived a good life and been able to stay away from most pain. The only thing I could think of that was "worse" was going to the Brooks and Funn concert back in the 1997ish time frame. Never do that again either. I did ask about getting a crown with a diamond in it so I could flash a little bling-bling and they said they could do it, for a high cost - but since it's on a molar in the back where nobody can see, I decided against doing that.

AFI released yet another list of "100 movies you may have heard of but have probably never seen" that are considered "best ever". Only a few movies post-1985 in the top 50 which was a little surprising. And Star Wars higher than Empire Strikes Back? PU-LEASE!!!!!

Entertainment of the Day - I watched the movie Bridge to Terabithia last night. I remember being sad when I read the book in 2nd grade or whatever - but the movie just didn't have the same effect. Not worthy of the "Top 100" list, not worthy of the "Worst 100" list either. The kid in the movie is the same as the one from Zathura which reminds me of the dumb blonde from The Apprentice (Randall's season) who always pronounced it "ZEN-thura" and was fired for being stupid. Nice random thought there for ya.

Weblink of the Day - Proof that Parents need to quit "negotiating" with their kids and just lay down the law. This kid's argument with his parents is recorded by the other players in his World of Warcraft game. Wait for all of their reactions online at the end - too funny!

CAUSE YOU HAD A BAD DAY

Ever have a start to a day you knew was just going to be bad? Some call it bad attitude, but I'm not so sure about that....

Weigh in wasn't that good. I blame the scale but I was up a little over a pound. Probably drank too much water this morning, but it's still easier to blame the scale. Maybe gravity is up with it being the Summer Solstice and all.... Oh yeah - Happy Summer Solstice by the way!!!! It's the danged longest day of the year, but also means the heat of summer really kicks in. Also says that winter is right around the corner which is fine by me!!!

Today will also be my first time of major dental work. Never had a cavity till January, now that same tooth has been hurting and after trying drugs, even tried bribing my dentist to put me under and rip the tooth out with a pliers, I have to have my very first root canal. He said per xrays the tooth looks very healthy and fine but it hurts with temperature change (like drinking very cold "water" on a hot day when your body temperature is up) to the point of extreme pain. So his thought is that the nerve in the tooth is shot (nothing I did to cause that) so we're going to "root canal" it. I looked online for a shirt that said "My first root canal" to wear to his office today but was unsuccessful. So pray for me to keep sane this afternoon. And don't expect to talk to me on the phone tonight since my mouth will be numb and I'll sound pretty unintelligent when I talk.

With the day going as well as it is, should be interesting for golf tonight.

I finished the Stephen King short story The Gingerbread Girl which was published last week in Esquire magazine. Not his best work by far, but not his worst either. A fairly quick read once you take the time to start it. He is very descriptive in his writing, but always borders on too much for people like me who aren't "vocabulary proficient" - remember, I'm an engineer all day long and we are historically not known for strong vocab skills.

And my complaint of the day? I got another wedding invite last night (that's not my complaint) but again it has the waxy piece of extra paper in there. What the heck is that for? Sure I could look it up on Wikipedia, but honestly - why put it in there as "tradition". Sorry, I have the mentality of everything has a purpose and if not, don't waste time/money/energy for something like that. If it were "pretty", it'd be different... but it's not.

Anyway - have a good Thursday. Just remember, no matter how bad it gets today - you're not the one getting the root canal.

Haiku of the Day -

Entertainment of the Day - I think American Idol should go back to using Bad Day as the voting off song. I like Daughtry (even though his songs are much over played on the radio right now), but his song Home just didn't compare to last year's BAD DAY!!!!

Theme Music

Congrats to Jason and Melissa in La Crosse with the birth of a new daughter. Another "niece" for me to be the human jungle gym for when I visit La Crosse!

So I'm taking a lead from Kahn's one blog in the past 4 months.... there has been a LOT of talk lately of "theme" music. Call it entrance music, or music coming to bat in the big game, but I think everyone should have a theme. The big talk from yesterday was Hilary Clinton announcing her campaign theme which is Celine Dion?!?!?!? Seriously? That's the best you could do? Guess she's trying to corner the market on the Over 50 female Canadian voters...... Obama is wisely going after the younger voters and he's even got a very attractive female admiror. How many presidential candidates get someone this hot to make a video about them for YouTube???? Bravo - WELL DONE!!!

Which would be my theme song? You know, that music that plays every time you enter a room! Take a page from the Wrestling folks who have used this for many decades! We've even talked about getting the lab to play our entrance music here at work as we badge in. U2 is probably as cliche as Celine Dion.... despite being one of the biggest U2 fans I know. Here's a quick list that comes to mind this morning:

1) Perry Mason - Ozzy..... the intro alone would get people pumped to see me (if they already weren't).
2) Thunderstruck - AC/DC.... no explanation needed but probably overused.
3) Even Flow - Pearl Jam
4) I Disappear - Metallica
5) St. Jimmy - Green Day
6) Girls - Beastie Boys
7) Hypnotize - Notorious B.I.G.
8) Of course the Big Show Theme Song....

That's all I can think of for now.... I have class today to get ready for.

Haiku of the Day -

How cool would that be?

Entertainment of the Day - An interesting movie/documentary was suggested to me by Matt and Jen... Enron: The Smartest Men in the Room is available through Netflix and it's very VERY interesting for anyone who has little knowledge of what happened with Enron. It's educational to learn of the entire rise (and of course the fall) of Enron up through the court decisions. It was released before Lay died of a heart attack. Also fishy to see the connections between Enron and certain governmental figures that are still in power.... that's all I'm sayin.

Most Expensive City?

So maybe I wasn't paying attention last year, but when they rank the most expensive cities in the world to live in, Moscow ranked 1st. For some reason, that really surprises me. I would have guessed Tokyo, New York, London, and maybe Oslo (since Norway is the most expensive place to visit). NY is 15th, Los Angeles is 42nd..... Good ol' depreciating US Dollar helping that out! So Moscow is first, London 2nd, Seoul 3rd, Tokyo 4th. Interesting...

Rochester is NOT on the list despite having more expensive gas (by usually 10 cents) than Minneapolis/St. Paul. So for anyone driving to the cities and passing through Rochester, do NOT fill up here. Just keep on driving and you'll find it cheaper.

Went to the Step Advantage last night at the RAC which is the "Pro" level I think. The funniest part of the class is how some of the ladies are very insistent on setting up in the same spot every time. And they don't take well to outsiders invading their space! So instead of setting up close (like some nameless readers), I plan on setting up in the EXACT SPOT next time where one lady insists on being. See what she does or says. Seriously, get a life!!

In sad news, there are rumors that they might be closing the Guinness Brewery in Dublin (St. James Gate) - why? They are brewing it in 50 sites around the world and since sales were down last year (who's not keeping up?) - one of the options on the table is to close the original site after 250 years of brewing Guinness. For those with access to my office, the panoramic picture on my white board is from the top of the Guinness Brewery in Dublin.... can't close that!!!!

Here's a fun quiz - Guess the Death Scene with drawings made in MS Paint. I was 6 of 10 on this one.

Haiku of the Day -

Entertainment of the Day - I watched Ghost Rider last night - the Comic Book movie with Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes. This could very easily be the WORST movie I've ever seen. Definitely top 5. It would have been less painful to watch Pretty Woman or even Steel Magnolias than watch this piece of crap movie. And sure, I can't stand Nicolas Cage and I'm not a huge Mendes fan... but that wasn't even the worst part of the movie. Took almost a full hour to get to the point of the movie and then you're left with cheezy graphics the rest of the film on top of the shitty acting. Started out ok, but the beginning was as good as it gets. Best part of the movie was the start of the credits when you knew it was over. Pathetic movie....

Weblink of the Day - A preview for the movie 300 but using moments from Simpsons History... well done!

Very Late Start to the Week

I know, late blog today.... so I need to start these things Sunday night in order to have time on Mondays to finish them! A quick weekend update:

Wedding was a good time on Friday in Des Moines. My SUPER HOT DATE was fun as well - she was one of about 5 people I knew at the wedding. Free food and free booze which is always a good time! The funny part of the evening was the "Talks a lot and is very random" lady that was at our table. I usually get along fine with people who talk a lot, but this lady took the cake! One of us would be in the middle of a response and she would have a random thought that couldn't wait and would interrupt you to say what was on her mind. Nice lady (with husband and daughter who was high school friend with the bride) but wow.... even I couldn't keep up with her random thought process, which is rare for me. She provided a good laugh for Jill and I though.

Rest of the weekend was spent trying to stay cool. Very warm and humid out showing off that summer is indeed here. I did finish Season 2 of The Office and am hoping that Season 3 is released soon. Very funny show! I feel for Jim though - he's got "Nice Guy Syndrome" more than I do and I can't blame him for liking Pam... She's HOT! And the more I watch it, the more I'm convinced that Dwight and my buddy Pat are indeed related.

Anyone watch the final round of the US Open? Surprised that Tiger was not able to close in with as amazing as he usually is in Major Tournaments. I did notice how ripped Tiger is anymore and it's no wonder he can hit his Pitching Wedge 160 yards!!! And with such accuracy. Winning score was +5 which should give hope to the rest of us hackers. Granted their course is way harder than the ones I play, but I'm not THAT far behind them. Ok, maybe I am if you've seen me golf this year. Which reminds me, I need to schedule another lesson.

Anyway - Have a great Monday..... If you're counting at home, Paris is STILL in jail.

Still Hating Journey

The Spurs could very well be the most boring Champions ever. What's funny is that I wouldn't even call them "World Champions" at this point since the NBA doesn't necessarily represent the best teams in the world. The NBA is probably the most culturally diverse major sport now a days which I will give them props on. Already people are comparing this team (with their 4th title in 9 years) to the Bulls, Celtics and Lakers.... too early to do that. Jordan's Bulls were a hell of a lot more fun to watch than the Spurs. Just can't throw the "Dynasty" word around the day after winning a championship.

And Parker wins the MVP, now goes to get married to Eva Longoria or whatever. Lucky 'Stard!

Which brings me to my "Complaint of the Day" which has been common this week. This has been a bad week anyways, and to make it worse - I have to continuously hear idiots that don't realize how shitty JOURNEY is. Thanks to the Sopranos ending (no, I don't watch it but I've felt the after effects all week to the ending) I heard Don't Stop Believing on the Daily Show from the other night (they were doing a Sopranos spoof) and then last night during the NBA finals they played the same dang song going into a commercial break. Seriously - the song sucks, the band sucks... get over it!

Wedding tonight in Des Moines. Might have to stop in Ames on the way down to see if there are any good sales on ISU clothing. Can't ever have too much ISU clothing is my rule!

Golf last night wasn't horrible ALL the time.... just most of the time. I really need to get my driving under control. My irons are actually hitting pretty well and i came away parring 3 of the holes and just missed a 50 foot birdy putt by about 2 inches. My short game was right on and I was 3 for 3 with my lob shots. Not a shot that I like doing, but all three cases last night - lob shot was pretty much my only option. Now I just need to figure out how to get off the teebox without losing a ball everytime.

Anyone want a washed up arrogant quarterback for cheap? Daunte Cullpepper is going somewhere other than Miami for next season, and now he comes with "driver stupidity" as he just bruised his non-throwing hand in a car accident. How is he going to do his audibles if he doesn't have two good hands?????

And I'm sad to say that my hunger strike didn't last too long. I was refusing to eat anything till they freed Paris (again) but this 2nd trip to jail might last more than I was willing to participate. I know, where's the dedication?

Have a great weekend - enjoy the heat! Rochester-fest next week!

Golf Season

And the heat continues to come in! 90s this weekend, where's the snow at? See how bad my golf game can be tonight with the humidity.

I was in a discussion this week with a coworker when we were talking about running. I said I'm running about a 9:40 mile but I'm also running between 3.1 and 3.5 miles in the mornings. Yeah, it's on a treadmill which makes it easier as well but the point is that I'm running sub-10 minute miles which was my goal for a long time. He brought up the point that if you only run ONE mile, you should be able to run even faster and said that hopefully most males in their late 20s should be able to run a sub-10 minute mile (Something I wasn't able to do until only recently). So with the curiosity set, I was able to run an 8:35 mile which is pretty much an 8:30 mile since the dang machine takes 5-7 seconds to get up to speed. I continued at that pace till 10 minutes were up then decided my body wasn't happy with me going that fast all of a sudden so I stopped but was happy with my progress.

US Open (Golf - not tennis... that one comes in August) starts today. They're actually playing right now in the fog at Oakmont where players say this could be one of the more difficult US Opens in recent memory. We'll have to see if the scores actually stay around E to make the rest of us feel good about our +30 rounds. There's a Tiger cam online so you can actually just watch Tiger's round every day if you're that bored.

Here's a weird read for you.... Man hires prostitute to come to his apartment. They light some reefer, he goes to get beer at the 7-11 (where is the closest 7-11 by the way? We only have sexual innuendo gas stations in Minnesota), returns to find her dead. So after reading the ENTIRE article.... yeah, gets only weirder - the overwhelming concern I have to the article is why the man climbed "out the window" to his own apartment??? Why not use the door?

And the final thought for today - I read that IHoP (known for kickass pancakes any time of the day... just don't go to the one we visited in Washington DC and expect to get in and out of there in under 3 hours!) is bidding to buy Applebees for more than $2 billion. If I had $2 billion, I wouldn't buy Applebees - maybe buy IHoP and convince them to open up one here in Rochester. Or open a Jimmy Johns in the townhouse next to mine that is only available for my use (and my close friends). That would be a good use of the money! They only serve #8s with no tomato too! And unlike the crappy Jimmy Johns we already have in Rochester, this one would deliver to everywhere in town - so wherever I was when I'm hungry for JJs, I can get a sub hand delivered to me.

Entertainment of the Day - Lots of new CDs coming out this summer. I'm already listening to the singles from the new Smashing Pumpkins (7.4 out of 10) and the new Velvet Revolver (8.1 out of 10). Also new Linkin Park (6.7 out of 10) entire CD is out.... hopefully these releases help save the downward trend in music the past year.

Today I honor Brian and his buddy Dale Jr. who announced his intention of coming to the dark side with Hendrick Motor Sports next season of NASCAR. This means you'll see the Budweiser guy driving a Tony The Tiger car from here on out! Plus think of all the Budweiser ads in bars that will have to change from the number 8. And Menards will have to change their slogan from "Gr8" to "PrtyOf5" or something different. Interesting interesting.... See how the fans react since the Jr. fans are usually the biggest group of Gordon haters.

Sorry to get anyone's hopes up with my mention of a date on Friday. Yes, she is drop dead gorgeous... but she's also married:( Too bad her husband is actually has a smart moment every couple of years (like last Friday night) otherwise I might stand a chance! haha! Thanks Jill for agreeing to be my date Friday night for the wedding so I don't have to be yet the only person going solo at yet another wedding. I'm destined to always be single;) You should all know that by now!

My complaint of today? Stupid post office raises rates on me, I even put TWO stamps on my dad's bday card since it was a larger square size (still under 1 oz) and they CAN'T GET IT THERE ON TIME!!! I put it in the mail last Friday giving it 4 mail days to make it 3 hours. Sorry Dad, I promise I put it in there last Friday. Check the postage stamp when you get it. Wish I had other options for mailing a letter....

Sorry for the delay today - had a dentist appointment this morning. Their satelite that usually plays older "light music" was out so they had to play something that was much more my style. Makes the time go faster if you have good music to listen to. I don't mind going to the dentist one bit, other than having to listen to Bette Midler or Celine Dion while a lady's hands are in my mouth.

Nothing else today.... have a good Wednesday! Tomorrow's weigh in day - hopefully back on track for "good news".

Entertainment of the Day - Not proud, but I watched Barnyard this weekend. It was..... ok. Do the kids like it? It kind of got lost with the other 10,000,000 cartoon movies that come out per year now that computers do the hard work on them.

Weblink of the Day - From Pat.... who by the way grew up on a beet farm JUST like Dwight from The Office..... just throwing it out there as a "coincidence". Many more similarities than just that but I'm too nice today to continue.

Power of Campbell

Happy Birthday Dad! Everyone tell my dad "Happy Birthday" if you see him today!

And in comes the humidity...... starting to really feel like summer now even though the solstice is next week.

I've had a recent obsession with reading and watching programs dealing with Joseph Campbell who was one of the foremost experts in Mythology. Watching the PBS broadcasts of his The Power of Myth from the late 80s. He died in 1987 but his ideas and message still ring on in epic stories today. Most of this recent obsession came from the History Channel's Star Wars: The Myth which used a lot of Campbell's ideas to show how Star Wars is just a modern version of any other story of mythology whether it be Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Budhist, or even Christian. One of the most interesting analogies was in the discussion of the Hero. The typical story of the hero is one of delayed maturing or reluctance to finally accept their mission. Luke Skywalker isn't quite sure what his purpose is, but then he gets thrown into the trash compactor. He sees the potential of death, but then after this experience he's a man who understands more fully his mission. Sound familiar? How about Jonah and the whale? If you're too lazy to read the story in your Bible, go watch the Vegitales version (which is actually pretty funny and usually on HBO somewhere).

Other themes deal with the Mentoring relationship (Obi Wan to Anakin, Qui-Gon to Obi Wan, Yoda to Luke) that also happens to the heros in other stories of Mythology (think of King Arthur). You'd be surprised how many modern religions have so many similarities whether it be Christianity, Budhist, Hindu, Islaam..... and even some of the stories from the ancient Indian Civilizations. Think of the Incas and their ritual of sacrifice... it's a theme that follows others that believe one must have to die in order to live. Sound familiar?

Anyway - Joseph Campbell was a huge expert in the field of world religions and their mythology. I love how he is able to tell how all of us around the world... aren't so different after all.

The Apple iPhone is coming out very soon. While I'm intrigued, I'm not convinced it's worth the extreme pricetag. There are other cell phones that offer similar realistic capibilities (not sure I need the mp3 player function when I already have multiple mp3 players) that are desired. I also think that the lack of a physical touchpad or keyboard is going to make the usability difficult. There's something to be said about feeling the keys you're punching. Same thought I have with the virtual keyboards - they will only slow me down! I do hope the other phones out there take a note with the higher amount of flash memory, plus the very nice screen on the thing. Yeah, I'm in the market (somewhat) for a new cell phone..... not ready to commit yet. I think the iPhone competition will catch up with some of these concepts by this fall so that might be a good time to go shopping.

BTW - I have a SUPER HOT DATE Friday night!!!!!! I know, you're all shocked. Too bad she's a #99 fan:(

Haiku of the Day

Entertainment of the Day - It was recommended that I check out Sliding Doors which is an English movie with Gwyneth Paltrow from 1998. Interesting concept how it follows two parallel lives of herself based on whether or not she catches the subway train at the beginning of the movie. I think the story was good, but I wasn't totally blown away by the movie. Still a good watch - maybe worth a redo with a larger budget:)

Weblink of the Day - A memory game to get you frustrated with this morning..... first thing you need to do is click the music OFF as it is very annoying.

Better Late Than Never

A non-typical weekend by even my standards.....

The Mahler 2 Saturday night was incredible. The performance by such a high caliber Orchestra was as perfect as expected (although I could criticize a couple of points if I wanted to but it's pretty small in comparison). The thing that impressed me the most is how amazing the low strings sound inside of Orchestra Hall. That place is well designed and in the first movement where it's completely quiet for the low strings to come back in at such a soft level.... you can hear every note and slight accent on that line without any trouble. Most of the audience was respectful at that point - one idiot girl was trying to swap seats with her date and stopped moving when the ENTIRE BALCONY gave her a dirty look. Be aware of what's going on on stage before you feel inclined to make noise. Should have thrown her out faster than a pitcher for the Cubs.

Built a Dog Kennel for a non-typical dog. The Kennel is nicknamed "Gitmo". Long story.

Now that the secret is out, I did pick up some Prince tickets last weekend.... so July 7th is the date of Prince!!!!

Gordon with an unusual win - pissing everyone in NASCAR off yet again and more outcries of "conspiracy"... too much rain this year for races.

French Open finals this past weekend - Justine Henin won way too easily.... not a big fan of hers. And Nadal won for the men which just shows his dominance on Clay as well as how difficult it is for the best tennis player ever in Federer to win on that surface. Back to Federer winning all the time as we start Grass Season in Tennis.

Paris back in jail.... and there for a while I'm sure. I agree with the prosecutor who is trying to get the sheriff on contempt charges. Glad the judge is holding strong and there are a lot of funny clips of Paris crying uncontrollably realizing she's going back to jail and her money can't help her.

Gas prices back under $3. It was actually $2.87 in the cities, but good ol' Rochester has to keep it higher as is tradition. We're at $2.99 this morning still.

Blog's out - sorry for the delay but that's typical for Monday Morning!

Friday.... FINALLY

I'm back today.... back like Paris going BACK to court!

Random thoughts to go through for a Friday:
  • Golf League last night sucked with strong winds (35mph) and lots of lost golf balls from the team. I'm done buying new golfballs this season.
  • We were right on the edge of a nasty storm yesterday - but of course it missed us. Should be a normal weekend for weather, good time to finish some yard work in time for the season of heat. My flowers are doing well, now to get some Hostas in the next few weeks!
  • I'll be at the performance of Mahler Symphony #2 with the Minnesota Symphony tomorrow night! I'll be in the balcony enjoying the performance cause I'm cheap like that. This is easily the greatest work of music ever composed - and I'm prepared to argue that with anyone who disagrees. I'll give you a review on Monday. Plus Kahn sings on Sunday - a good weekend for good music!
  • Anaheim won the Stanley Cup on Wednesday - so Ice Hockey is over just in time for summer! It was neat to see the team hoist the cup in front of the home crowd even though I don't care for Anaheim. Hockey preseason starts in like 2 weeks.
  • iPhone commercials are all over lately giving the upcoming release a lot of hype. I'm not sold on it yet mainly because it's not WAY ahead of the competitive products like the iPod is. There are a lot of cell phones doing what the iPhone does... and sometime with smarter designs. We'll see.....
  • Rumors are out there that both Paula and Randy are being replaced on American Idol next season..... oh yeah, it's from the National Enquirer so this rumor is probably true since the "Alien Child Born in Texas with Head of Lizard" is probably also true.
  • Happy Birthday Jen this weekend!
  • Yesterday was "National VCR Day"..... I forgot to record it on my DVR so I missed it. I'll check out youtube to see what they had on TV to celebrate the holiday! Does anyone still use a VCR? I have one.... in storage.
That's all I have for today - hoping next week will be back to "normal".... have a good weekend!

Weird Weblink Day

It's Weird Weblink Day on my blog page today. That's what happens when you have a 2.5 hour meeting from 6-8:30 at night to entertain yourself during!

Handwriting Analysis - Take about 5 minutes to go through this one. Actually write when it tells you to write on a piece of paper. At first I thought it was trying to be 100% serious, but the longer you watch, the funnier it becomes. He actually wasn't that far off but not sure how "scientific" this process is. Who knows.

100 Words Every High School Graduate Should Know - I know exactly 45 of them. And I graduated more than 10 years ago! Granted I can easily Google every one of the words to find a definition which is my "engineering solution" but I still am curious how many high school grads know all of these. I'm curious how well my mom does with this list - I bet she's in the upper 80s or higher:) My mom's smart like that. I didn't get any vocabulary skills from her unfortunately.

Video on Men's Restroom Etiquette - Very true but rather long (about 9 min). Worth a viewing if you're bored though and need a good laugh. And for the ladies who wonder why there is never a line outside of the men's room... here is why.

JibJab's attack of all the 24 hour news networks.... this was BEFORE the hour after hour debate with 9 experts (all on the same screen in Brady Bunch Style) debating how long Paris Hilton will be in prison.... I'm not kidding, anyone else catch that?

For Eddie and Brian who LOVE Pearl Jam.... here's one of the funnier videos of "Misheard Lyrics" for the song Yellow Ledbetter. For the REAL lyrics, click here.

And the most random thing you'll see today..... Fuggy Fuggy. The language may offend people that over hear from the cube next door even though they're only saying "Fuggy Fuggy" throughout... you've been warned.

And my favorite of the day..... Brokeback Saved by the Bell!!! For all of you AC Slater and Zach fans out there!

Have a great Wednesday!!!

Soul Pole and Other Forms of Hazing

You knew they were coming.... get your very own "Free Paris" T-shirts but hurry, doubt they will be needed for long. I bet she stays the entire 23 days. A June she'll never forget! But on the plus side, I'm sure any videos she makes while in prison will be hot sellers!

On Sunday, I caught a brief segment of Rick Dees Top 40 show and he was discussing all the recent High School and College Graduates. So he had a list of the top 5 Graduation Songs of all time. Here's the songs that I can remember

Graduation by Vitamin C
I Believe I can Fly - R. Kelly
Good Riddance - Green Day
And two others that aren't coming to mind right at the moment.....

But the first song that comes to my mind when it's Graduation time that was left off of the list????? Alice Cooper singing School's Out!! And for a unique version on this, check out him singing the song with the Muppets! Who else finds you the good stuff like this??? Or the segment from Dazed and Confused that should ring true for all of us remembering that last day of school!! Ben Affleck's finest acting days. WARNING: PG language.

After Graduation has passed, you get to start thinking about what songs you want to play for your retirement:(

I watched Afra Samurai this weekend which is the new Anime film voiced by Samuel L Jackson. No, there are no Motha F***in' Snakes in the Motha F***in' Afro.... but it was actually well done for a newer Anime film. It reminded me of our obsession in high school with Akira - considered by many the "standard" of all anime movies, possibly the greatest ever. The other "standards" that I have seen but don't remember too much about off hand were Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll. I should rerent all of those some weekend to watch. For those unfamiliar with Anime films... they are Japanamation cartoons that are pretty bloody and voilent. Anytime someone gets stabbed, blood shoots in every direction or the person implodes! Very unique style and far from the Bugs Bunny Days. Also reminded me of Kill Bill which not only used the anime tradtion in the one scene, but there were some other similarities throughout the movie.

Stupid Anaheim won last night to go up 3-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals. Means Lord Stanley's Cup will be onhand for the rest of the games. It is fun to watch the final one and see the excitement of the team who wins it all. Anaheim should win game 5 at home to skate around with the cup on home ice.

Entertainment of the Day - Seraphim Falls: movie with an Irishman and an Englishman playing Colonels from the American Civil War. If you're able to get past that hurdle, it's a pretty dumb movie that I guess had potential but then nothing.... don't waste your time if you ask me.

Weblink of the Day - Ok, this might be the coolest thing I've posted in a long while (other than the Muppets clip earlier).... Microsoft announced a new technology that will blow your mind! It's a double touch screen computer in coffee table format, but within 5 years, you'll all want one of these in your home! Very cool!

Random Thoughts

Anyone else see the MTV Movie Awards last night? It's actually one of the better ones in recent memory although the music performances were pretty week. I just can't get into the "Umbrella" song. And as much as I don't really care for Sarah Silverman, I thought she was funny and not afraid to attack people sitting right in front of her. Like Paris Hilton! That was actually very funny. And the repeat kiss between Will Farrell and "Borat" (winner of Best Kiss from Talladega Nights) - was it funny? yes.... wrong? yes:)

The best part of the show was the fact that they were practically sponsered by the new Transformers Movie. Lots of previews and "Exclusive Clips" shown throughout. I'm getting more and more excited to see this film and I plan on squeezing time in on the 4th of July to go see it here in Rochester... let me know if you're interested in joining. Optimus Prime still may rank as the coolest good guy in all of cartoons!

Paris Hilton has checked into Jail. Jail for Hollywood Celebrities has become the "in" thing now and going to rehab is on its way "out". Much better for publicity. There were some comments made last night at the MTV Award Show directed at Paris while she was sitting right in the audience. Pretty gutsy and then of course the camera jumps right to her not laughing at the jokes. Then she indeed turns herself in at the end of the evening. That's "hot"!

A productive weekend around the house. After 14 months of putting off me finishing my landscaping in front of my house, I found and bought the matching rocks. It's looks nice, now hopefully no more of my plants die in the off season. I'll post a picture of it soon. Now I can start the landscaping on the North side of my townhouse and take another 14 months to finish that!!!

Sorry to cut this short - but Monday's are always obnoxiously busy around work... HAVE A GREAT WEEK! Congrats to all the educators out there who are finished (or quickly finishing) school for the summer!!

Hurray June

I know I said last June that I had seen the 2nd coming of Jordan while watching the Miami Heat win the NBA Championship.... but did anyone else see King Labron last night? Holy Crap! Playing one of the better defensive teams in the league, he scored the final 25 points for Cleveland in the 4th Quarter and both 1st and 2nd Overtimes. That's not supposed to happen in a game with 5 guys on the court per team. And at this part of the playoffs, one guy shouldn't be able to beat a team like he did last night. It was simply incredible in my opinion.

Speaking of Royalty.... Tickets go on sale tomorrow for Prince at the Target Center. And prices are under $500!!! Prince is one of the final groups on my "yet to see live" list and I plan on crossing him off in July. Also means I need to catch up on his last few albums as I am like the other 90% of the people out there who only know his stuff from the 80s and 90s. I'll skip the "new perfume" part of the concert.

Seeing the trailer for the new Transformers movie makes me excited for this one - maybe even seeing it in the theatre this summer!! Yes, like many other grown adults who watched cartoons through the 80s, Transformers were one of my favorites. Click on the link above, then check out the "Exclusive Trailer". Is there any good guy from the cartoons who is better or cooler than Optimus Prime? He was protective like a big brother, yet wise like a father. What other cartoons did I watch?

I remember Transformers was early on Saturdays.... 6:30am if I remember right. I would set my alarm to wake up, head downstairs to watch Transformers, then I had 30 minutes to get some cereal and toast before the next round of cartoons came on. I was a big GI Joe fan, loved the old Bugs Bunny/Road Runner repeat cartoons.... Muppet Babies, Dungeons and Dragons cartoon, Smurfs.... POLE POSITION!! There was a few episodes of M.A.S.K. in there too (think of the flying cars). Gummi Bears, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Garfield and Friends (remember the Farm animal part of that cartoon?)..... Inspector Gadget, Jetsons (although I think those last two were on weekdays after school, not Saturday Mornings..... Duck Tales (WOO-OOO), PEE-WEE'S PLAYHOUSE!!! Remember "Land of the Lost"???? With the claymation Dinosuars and the cheezy introduction?

Ahhh... memories! Yes, I watched too much TV back then - probably still do. I also watch just as many cartoons now adays as I did back then. Any classic ones from the 80s that I'm missing?

Haiku of the Day
Too many cartoons
