What's Your Favorite Scary Movie

Happy Halloween to Y'all! Hope you had a good weekend and enjoyed the Cyclone victory as much as I did:) Today's Halloween so first thing is first:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NATE!!!

Ok, so I added another title to my wall at a party Saturday night. I am now a Pumpkin Pie eating champion among all the other titles I already hold. We had 1/4 of pie with lots of whipped cream to down as fast as we could using NO hands. I still won but admittedly had crap all over my beard when we were done. Feels good to be a champion.

And no, I did not dress up this year. I usually don't dress up. No good excuse really, I was just lazy this year and didn't come up with anything.

But in the spirit of the holiday, I'd like to share my list of my favorite scary movies or movies about Halloween.

1) The Shining. Does anything else beat Stephen King, Jack Nicholson, and Stanley Kubrick? All three being geniuses at what they do make for one heck of a scary movie. Especially when I watched it at 1 in the morning with my brother when I was in high school. Not sure why that freaked me out so bad but it remains one of my favorite scary movies of all time.

2) Sleepy Hollow. Speaking of great directing and acting - I LOVE Tim Burton films (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory comes out this month) and he always calls upon Danny Elfman to do his music and Johnny Depp to do his acting. All three are very dark characters and have a great result in anything they work on (yes, even Edward Scissorhands was awesome in my mind!)

3) The Ring. I loved this movie, but probably because I watched it at 1am in a darkened basement so when the little girl starts crawling out of the TV.... that ruled! I love movies like that. The Ring 2 wasn't nearly as good but I thought they did a decent job for a sequel.

4) The Blaire Witch Project. This is probably the greatest movie of all time to see in the theatre because constantly throughout the movie people are screaming and getting tense in anticipation of something jumping out but NOTHING DOES! I loved that. I saw it 3 times in the theatre just to watch the other people's reactions. I also wasted $7.50 to see the second one which was easily one of the worst films I've ever seen. Don't bother.

5) 80s Horror Flicks. There are a bunch of them but While Friday the 13th part 1 is a classic (ending is one of the greatest scenes), the rest of them are pretty crappy. Halloween 1 and 2 are pretty good (along with the Halloween H20) but again, after that they sucked. Nightmare on Elm Streets are standard classics and will make you think twice before going to bed. But the only character who freaked me out as a kid watching these movies was Pinhead from the Hellraiser movies. He was one scary SOB. Chucky was just dumb (although some doll will probably kill me in my sleep tonight just for saying that).

Others:
Silence of the Lambs - made me scared of windowless basement rooms and crossdressers who look in the mirror and say "Would you f**k me? I'd f**k me... I'd f**k me hard". I know that's Eddie's favorite scene.

Jack Frost - movie about a serial killing snow man. Was really crappy but made me laugh. I just love the thought of a killing snowman! Note that it has the same title as the Michael Keaton family flick that came out a year later but was a totally different movie.

Tales From The Crypt - a quality show on HBO that I wish they still had. That was 1/2 the reason I wanted to get HBO when I was in high school. I'll let you figure out what the other 1/2 was. Another show with Danny Elfman doing the theme music.

Exorcist - Although I enjoy the Bunny's Version better, still a standard setting classic. I'm still haunted by the random scary face that pops up on the screen when Karras is dreaming about his mother and she comes up from the subway and crosses the street. I heard once that it was this scene that caused Billy Graham to denounce the movie as being "from Satan".

Anyway - hope you have a great Halloween! Send me your costume pictures and I'll post them! As long as they're fully clothed. And if you ladies send pictures that aren't fully clothed, send more of them! haha....

Song of the Day - with all the Danny Elfman references, I pulled out his CD Music for a Darkened Theatre which has a sort of "best of" his earlier movies that he's done. For a full list of his works, go here. Oh yeah, he did the theme to Desperate Housewives which I know is THE PAT's favorite show. So remember that before you go making fun of me.

Video of the Day - I watched Boo! this weekend and it was pretty crappy acting as would be expected but there were a couple of scenes with things jumping out. Rent it if you're really bored!

Webpage of the Day - A list of all sorts of "haunted places" (thanks Cari for the link!). Has a bunch from Cedar Rapids where I grew up (including the Black Angel in Iowa City) and only a couple from Rochester. Guess the only thing scary about Rochester is the idea of living here as a single person who enjoys arts and culture!

Have a great Halloween!!!

GO CYCLONES!!!

HOLY CRAP WE WON!!!

Nice job Cyclones! That's the team I was expecting to see all year and that's the team that should be 8-0 right now dangit. Oh well, still hopes of going to the Big 12 Title Game to take down the Longhorns but we'll need to keep playing well and some help. Welcome Back Stevie!!

Congrats also to Arizona who upset Oregon State on the road. That's pretty cool:) There ya go C - told ya they'd win!!

NDSU hasn't started but they'll win:)

I'm off to enjoy this victory for the rest of the weekend. Talk to you Monday!

TGIF

First off, a shout out to the MILLIONS of readers and fan base up in Fargo! I'm happy I can entertain all of you on a daily basis!

Second off, everyone welcome Quinn Markson Whinery. He is pushing 10 days old now and already shows signs of Cyclone Greatness! Congrats again to Mark and Susan on a cute son. Let me know when you're ready for me to take him to some Cyclone tailgating parties!

The Brews Brothers took at least 4 points last night and possibly 5 (out of a possible 7). I stepped up with a 153, 146 and my pathetic 100. That's a new high for me though. A lot better than my 114 average. What sucks is how I had 10 pins to aim at in the "extra" 10th and only hit 3 pins, then in the 10th of the 3rd game, I left a 7 5 split and only had to hit one of the pins for my first ever 400 series. I went right between the two. Dangit!! Thanks to all the cheering fans who came out to yell at us!

Next, I just wanted to laugh at the pathetic White House Administration that is finally getting what it deserves. That's what happens when all of you elect a crooked politition. Oh Sorry, he was the "Christian" option according to most of you. Look at him now. Libby is going down and although Rove should have been fired (per Dum-ya's own words before he realized it was his own man... then he retracts) he'll be indicted at a later time. That plus the fact that Miers finally realized she actually might NOT be the most qualified person to sit on the Supreme Court bench. By her requirements, I have a lot of friends that are equally as qualified as her for the highest court in the land. Martine would be my first pick. She's smart and would serve well.

Some sports predictions to get wrong but I still have fun with it:

  • Cyclones over A&M at College Station. 31-23 which means yes, we made a field goal again!
  • Colorado over KSU, Oklahoma over Nebraska, Texas destroys Ok St, and nobody cares about Missouri/Kansas (sorry Dr. Angie - but you didn't even know who Missou was playing)
  • Arizona with the big upset at Oregon State (for you Christa) with some brilliant play from the long snapper!
  • Go Northwestern!! They'll beat Michigan easily and Iowa takes the week off to cry and come up with new excuses why they lost last week again.
  • And for all the loyal fans that are further North than I am..... NDSU takes out Southern Utah on the road!! YEAH BISON!!!
  • Pro-style: Bears over Lions, Carolina over Sexkings, Denver over Philly, and San Diego over Cleveland

Finally, a shot of the awesome Nephews. Elliott called last night to tell me he has a new flashlight. It's brown according to him.

Song of the Day - Car Wash by Rose Royce is blaring on my headphones this morning. Not sure how I got it in my head this morning but it's a good song for a Friday. Gets you pumped up to get through the last day of the week and enjoy the weekend. I know it's halloween weekend but I have no costume this year so I'm not too excited. Never been a big exciting person for Halloween. Although it's my buddy Nate's 30th Birthday is on Monday. Happy Birthday old man!

Video of the Day - More videos have arrived from Netflix for me to watch this weekend. I did finally watch The Longest Yard with Adam Sandler. Pretty funny movie with Chris Rock in it. And of course the cameo by Rob Schneider was well worth the wait!! It gets 4 out of 5 stars on my scale.

Webpage of the Day - Exxon posts a new record for profit. Um..... DUH! Does anyone else see this as a problem? And they aren't guilty of price gouging? Someone please explain that to me!

Back by Popular Demand

So sorry for the lack of post yesterday. I never knew how many people read till I didn't post for a day. I got more "kind words" from my fans than I knew were possible. There were no "are you on your deathbed" or "is there anything you need in life to allow you to post a blog today"... it was more "what the h*ll is up" or "why haven't you posted yet". Just kidding.....

But I decided to list all the reasons why I didn't blog yesterday and let you choose which ones to use:

1) Spent the morning with OJ trying to find the "real" killers
2) My dog ate my blog
3) Couldn't resist the Sex and the City Marathon on TBS (um.... NO!)
4) Stayed up way too late watching the White Sox win (dangit) in 14 innings
5) Had breakfast with Britney to try to smooth things over in our new "friendship"
6) Put my shoes on backwards so spent all day making wrong turns. Ended up in Wisconsin before I figured it out.
7) Was on phone all night helping Sheryl Swoopes figure out "who she is" (btw - not sure why this is a huge thing..... gay athletes shouldn't change the way we look at sports and besides, nothing and I mean NOTHING can save the WNBA and make me watch. If there's bass fishing on, it gets a higher priority than WNBA.... WE GOT GAME!!)
8) Teddy Ruxpin was reading me bed time stories and he kept skipping so wouldn't shut up.
9) I decided it was a perfect 35 degree morning so went for a 10 mile run. What's funny is how many people actually think this way! Sick-os!
10) I was making reservations for a Brews Brothers team outing on Lake Minnetonka. Had to make a lot of calls to Louisiana, Houston, and Atlanta to bring up some "friends"
11) My bookie called with some deals I couldn't pass up.... he's now fired.
12) I was out practicing my form for tonight's return to the lineup for bowling. I'm shooting for a 360 series tonight!!!
13) Begging for money so I can fill up my Trailblazer with gas. Should have fixed the Saturn when I had the chance!
14) Had my eye appointment yesterday morning and spent the morning with my eyes dilated and couldn't really focus on anything till afternoon. Dang right eye is a stronger level again... I hate getting older.
15) Was in depression when I found out my usual cute assistant at the eye doctor place is now married which happened between my last visit two years ago and yesterday morning..... another one gone:(
16) Had dinner reservations with Brittany Murphy and we had way too much to drink! One thing led to another.... and before you knew it we were back at her place jumping on the trampoline! She said it was a sleep-over so I said "Well, okay... but I get to be on top."....... anyone following? There has to be some fans of Big out there! I know of one fan that better have caught that after I heard of you doing the chopsticks keyboard dance in public!!! That's still pretty funny C!
17) Still wondering how I was a week off with my Star Wars release date. Trying to figure out what to do for the next 5 days!
18) Neighbors wanted to throw a kegger so I was planning out a party with them including Keg Stands, beer pong, and flippy cup (new game I was kindly introduced to (involves some random chick biting me on the neck so I wouldn't win) rules and explanation coming soon)
19) My fan base in Columbia Missouri and I spent a lot of time "plotting" for future events and activities. You know who you are!!
20) No good reason really, sorry again to disappoint. But keep coming back and reading!!! Thanks for watching!

Gas is $2.29 this morning.... sorry, $2.299 to be exact. I know people are saying "That is so much better" but that's a bunch of crap. It's like saying, "I'm glad he stopped punching me in the jimmy and just resorted to slapping me hard across the jaw". I remember Drew in his infinite wisdom telling me once how people acclimate to the newer higher prices so when prices do even a little bit of "relief" they think that's so much better when in reality, it's not. This is how they get away with driving the prices higher and higher. It's called inflation and it sucks! BTW - the link on the word acclimate goes to the dictionary definition for my engineering friends. I have to do that for some of them that hate words with more than one syllable. Drew was exactly right..... he also was exactly right when he said "wait till you put in that first $25 tank of gas into the new Trailblazer"... shit, I wish I only had to put in $25 now;) I think Drew was a fortune teller in a former life. Just needs more practice to get back on track in this one!

My big thing lately has been "Karma"... I might spend all of tomorrow on that. But the new thing I was "invited" to think about last night were about talking to my angels. Still thinking about that one. Maybe that's been my problem lately. More on that one later. But fair warning - Karma is very real and will bite you in the ass later on so be nice to one another!!

Song of the Day - After seeing Aaron Neville sing God Bless America at the World Series the other night, I now have Don't Know Much going through my head. What a shitty song to have going through your head. Need some help here folks, usually my solution is to listen to the song and then it's gone but I am proud to say I don't own this one.

Video of the Day - Um... haven't really watched movies this week with Baseball on. "The Apprentice" is on tonight (the one with Trump who my nephew Alexander thinks looks like me). Still haven't watched last week's episode so don't ruin it for me. I'm hoping there are 2 fewer of the annoying stupid girls left but doubt it. Probably some new controversy for the guys and now 2 of them are gone.

Webpage of the Day - 7-Foot Great Dane. Although I'm not a fan of Great Danes, it would be cool to have a dog this big. Oso isn't 7 feet tall, but he's cuter than the dog in the article. Oso is in the off season for our training for the Great Outdoor Games, but we're still doing mental exercises to keep the momentum going for next year's 25 foot jump!!!

HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

Star Wars Time

NOTE: So I already had this all typed up when I realized I was a week off - DVD comes out next week but since I don't have time to type up another Blog today, you'll just have to deal with it!! haha - enjoy!
So yeah, I'm part geek. Especially on days like today when they release the final episode of the Star Wars Septology or whatever it is when there's 6 episodes. Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith comes out on DVD today and yes, I'll go pick it up after work. Mainly because it's cheaper at Best Buy when you get it in the first couple of days of its release. Someday when Football and Baseball are over with, I'll pull a marathon of all 6 movies. Heck, I did the Godfather Trilogy Marathon, I can do the Star Wars Marathon:)

So today, in all my nerdiness, I present my opinions on:

THE BEST AND WORSE OF STAR WARS

Best Movie - The Empire Strikes Back. Which interestingly enough was one of 2 movies NOT directed by George Lucas. Return of the Jedi was the other one. One of my first childhood memories was seriously crying because the ships were so loud at the beginning of Empire.... I was 3 - give me a break!

Worst Movie - Phantom Menace. Not enough skin from Natalie Portman. I am a fan of Liam Neeson but there was some bad overall acting in that movie. Jar Jar should have been shot by the end of the episode (even though most little kids love him and that's who Lucas wrote them for). Was hoping the Directors Cut had a nude scene of Princess Amidala:) That would have been pretty sweet.

Best Actor - Alec Guinness..... Just my opinion. Harrison Ford is up there too but he's the obvious choice. Harrison gets all the quality lines though and he's the reason everyone loves the original Trilogy so much. He's not a Jedi, he's nothing special, just a normal human like you and I are but he's funny and a smart ass. My favorite part is during the Empire Strikes Back - right before he's frozen and Leia gives him a kiss and says "I love you" and his total manly response????? "I KNOW" - what a stud. He gives men everywhere hope of one day wearing the pants in the relationship!

Worst Actor - Still Natalie Portman even though she's hot as hell.

Best Character - Admiral Ackbar in a landslide!!!

Best Costume - Either Boba Fett or The Emperial Storm Troopers (yeah, the red ones - they were my favorite action figure as a kid.... and as an adult). I could easily be persuaded to say the Princess Leia costume while under the Java slave outfit:) That was hot!

Worst Character - Watto annoyed me bigtime. He's the flying dude in Episode 1 and 2 that owns Annikan and his mom. Jar Jar is a close 2nd though.

Worst Costume - Bib Fortuna (yes, I had to look that one up). He was ugly when I saw it as a kid, and he's still butt ugly.

Best Line - Anything by Ackbar including "Focus all fire on that Super Star Destroyer" and the best line ever "IT'S A TRAP!!!"

Worst Line - the famous line by Luke "But I was going to Toushe Station to pick up some power converters"

Best Soundtrack by John Williams - The things he does in Attack of the Clones was pretty amazing. He also pulls out all the stops during Revenge of the Sith where he pulls back themes from the original Trilogy. If you stay through the credits, you'll hear him pull out the old march from the award ceremony from the original Star Wars Episode 4.

Best Parts to imitate when I'm drunk - Easily the Sandperson imitation from Episode 4. I've been known to do that when I'm not drunk either. And I like to pull out a Chewy growl from time to time. My dad said I should have entered the Chewbacca contest last May they had in Iowa City. He thinks I would have won.

Best Cameo by Me in a Star Wars Movie - yes, bet you didn't know that I was in the original Star Wars Movie. CHECK IT OUT!!! Stay on Target, Stay on Target!

On that note....
***************************************************************************

Song of the Day - Go listen to Star Wars or something;) I have all the soundtracks if anyone wants to borrow them.

Video of the Day - Duh - next....

Webpage of the Day - Still one of the funniest news stories I've seen in the past couple of years. Dude gets arrested for "living" in the Star Wars line. One of my favorite examples of "stupid people"

HAVE A GREAT DAY and MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!!!

A Day of Congratulations

Concerts are over for this month. I have rehearsal starting up again in a couple of weeks but hopefully next concert will be more enjoyable;) This one went extremely long which is never polite without warning. But it's in the past - time to move forward.

There were a ton of things happening this weekend that I'd like to use today to give shout outs to all the "winners" that affect my day to day activities.

First off, CONGRATS to the Cyclones who finally got their first win in the Big 12. So instead of the 7-0 that we should be (with 4-0 in the Big 12 North), we're a stupid 4-3 but there are still hopes. I know it was only Oklahoma State who is playing the role of Baylor this year in the Big 12 South but still, a win is a win. Congrats also to the Longhorns who man-handled Texas Tech. I think this might be Texas's year and they will definitely give USC a run for their money.

Congrats to the Minnesota Sex-Vikings who snuck out a win over the annoying Packers. I enjoy watching the Packers lose because they have the MOST annoying fans in the world. Yes, worse than the Squawkeyes and worse than the Corn-smuckers. So now I get to listen to them whine all week about how that field goal should never have counted because there was snow in Malaysia or some lame excuse. Congrats also to Iowa grad Nate Kaeding who after causing San Diego to lose their playoff game by missing easy field goals, had his kick blocked yesterday and it was returned for a touchdown to give Philly the win. If he misses it, San Diego still might win, but instead...... go Nate!! haha, stupid Hawkeye.

Congrats to the White Sox for yet another victory that will be tainted. I've never seen a team with so much controversy in the post season. I'm still pulling for Houston though (it's an NL thing) but this is some good baseball folks - hope you're watching.

Congrats to the government and their brilliant idea of pushing Daylight Savings out a month. So now the sun comes up at noon here in Rochester and it's still down before I leave work for the day. Brilliant - just brilliant. Not exactly the way I would have drawn up a solution to our energy crisis but whatever.

Congrats to IBM and their plans to build what looks like a moat on the South side of the Rochester plant. Seriously, there's a 6 foot deep and about 6 feet wide trench around most of the south parking lot that I hope they fill with water and put draw bridges around. I know that the competition is severe out there, but this is a perfect way of keeping Sun and Dell out of our building. But I know the competition is smart and they'll come at us with catapults and crossbows so we better be ready!!!

Congrats to Rochester Construction that are still nowhere close to finishing the Highway 52 construction. I'm no expert but you can tell they still have a long ways to go with the middle permanent wall. All of you optimists that said "it will be done by Oct 1st".... you're smoking something. Please share.

Congrats to Mark and Susan on the birth of their beautiful and tall son Quinn (Mighty Quinn). More pictures when I continue to get them:)

Congrats to you for still reading my blog with as much as I type anymore:)

Song of the Day - I'm in class for 2 days (my Leadership Training - good stuff!!) and the pre-class entertainment is the Album Genius Loves Company which is the Ray Charles CD with a bunch of duets. Check it out if you like the blues or some good vocal jazz!

Video of the Day - I watched Coach Carter this weekend. Pretty good feel-good story about inner city and a high school basketball team. Not sure how "true" the entire movie was but makes you hope there are actually stories where a coach focuses on the STUDENT-athlete part but I'm more of a pessimist in that regards anymore. Movie got 4 out of 5 stars from me.

Webpage of the Day - I missed the International Championship of Rock, Paper, Scissors again this year, but hopefully not next year! $7000 if you win!!! Sometime go read all of the rules and you'll be amazed at how precise they are to this "activity" (no national anthem before hand so not a sport). Go here and check it out (especially the profiler Quiz (under Sept 12).

Have a Great Monday!!!

Symphony Shortcomings

Ok so I just got home from rehearsal and that was absolutely horrible. Now I know what IBMs policy is on blogging, but I just looked through my Musicians Manual and it has no policy (nor will it ever) against expressing publicly a musician's displeasure in his or her own forum. So that's what I'm going to do now.

Sorry for the negative tone to the blogs this week - next week will be much better, I PROMISE!!

We are playing two pieces by Beethoven. The first is the Violin Concerto in D which was composed in 1806, right after he published his Heiligenstadt Testament. This was a remarkable point in Beethoven's life when he suffered from depression due to the deterioration of his hearing to the point that his "most prized possession" was gone. While in Heiligenstadt, he wrote a letter to his brothers (the Testament) where he addressed his increasing deafness and his depression that was the result. What is so amazing is that he wrote some of the most incredible music after this point in time - most agree it was his best and the music that followed was the compositions of his soul and for the first time music history saw in a new music era, the Romantic Era.

So this concerto has a mixture between the Classical Era and the new thoughts of the Romantic Era that Beethoven helped create. Problem is, our Symphony is playing it in the style of neither. I'm not sure how to describe it but there is no style or phrasing that gives a concerto such as this its character. Ruggero Allifranchini who is Associate Concertmaster of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra is the soloist and is doing a marvelous job on the solo part. Too bad our conductor and its players have the enduring fault of never being able to follow the soloist. For two rehearsals now he is trying to get everyone to play at his tempo (which is the proper way) but we fail him every time. The concerto features some amazing melodies for Beethoven who struggled endlessly to create melodies (opposite of Mozart who had millions of melodies in his head and are still some of the most recognizable tunes to this day). Beethoven would struggle for that melody, but when he found something, the variations or the harmonic texture that he could create around that melody was what makes Beethoven one of the Great "Demi-Gods" of classical music.

But the concerto is the highlight of the concert this weekend!! We are also playing Beethoven's Symphony Number 7 and this is a Romantic Symphony (especially the second movement that has passion through and through). During Beethoven's Second Period, he composed most of his middle symphonies (including #5 which you would all recognize from Fantasia and #7 that we are playing) and used this period to change the sonata form that had preceded him during the Classical Era versions of symphonies. He placed more emphasis on the slow movement and the emotions that can be evoked in a minor key (such as this symphony). His Scherzos (3rd movement) had more driving motion than in the past, and the 4th movements were as important as the first movements in form and overall structure. So with this in mind, let me critique our performance tonight during dress rehearsal.

1st movement... sure, we pulled it off and although not perfect, it's playable and sounds like Beethoven. There is no phrasing whatsoever and no passion behind what we're playing. There is no contrast of dynamics and no ability to make the listener really understand the style of the changing events in Beethoven's life at time of the composition. 2nd movement is one of Beethoven's most famous works. The first premier of the piece - it was so well received that the audience demanded an encore of the 2nd movement. There will definitely be no encore tomorrow night or Saturday night. The tempo is marked 76 I believe but we're playing it closer to 90 which allows no room for any characteristic playing. Now I know I have the late Bernstein Recordings with the NY Philharmonic of a lot of classical standards (I know my buddy Chad loves all of these Prince of Whales or whatever recordings as much as I do) and Leonard had a tendency to take things a lot slower and laid back in his later years but during this 2nd movement, this is VERY appropriate to go under tempo. Not way over like we are. Doesn't even sound like a slow movement, sounds like we have a scherzo in that movement.... then the 3rd is even faster. To the point that there's no longer any drive, but a bunch of chaos that sometimes comes through as notes, other times comes through as musicians trying to play catch up. By the 4th movement, all of us are either too tired or too upset to care anymore and then we finish.

The La Crosse Symphony is a wonderful set of musicians with a lack of proper leadership. You can blame who you want and I can blame who I want - deal? Problem is that most of the musicians have so much resentment for our conductor and there is a history to that tense relationship and nobody from the Board of Directors will address this issue. Till then, the symphony players will continue to be unhappy and play out of spite towards their conductor, and the community will eventually realize the loss in quality to the musicianship. We have lost many good players over the years due to these "political" issues that remain unresolved and worse yet: unaddressed!!!

If you're interested in this concert, give me a call and I'll send you some CDs with the concert music on it. Much better than suffering through the 2 hours required to listen to everything. It's actually a lot less with the faster than Beethoven intended tempos but we're adding some reading of Beethoven's original letters to his Immortal Beloved to the beginning of the program. I'm trying to keep an open mind about this part at this point.

Another thing that bothers me is the fact that the reviewer for the La Crosse Tribune will show up Friday night and write the same standard review that he always writes for us. "Wonderful, one of the best yet". He writes that for every concert because God forbid we actually tell a symphony when they suck and need some kind of improvement. If he wrote that, ticket sales would suffer Saturday and that is the sign of a bad review, not the sign of a symphony with growing issues. It happens with every smaller town symphony! I promise. I publicly Challenge Terry (forget his last name at the moment) to write a pure musical review of our concert tomorrow night and compare it to other professional organizations performances of the same standard pieces and then tell me we couldn't do better. I believe we have the talent, just lack the proper leadership.

On that note:

Song of the Day - Anything by Beethoven. Beethoven was a depressed character most of his life that brought out some of the most amazing emotions to create the Romantic Period. With Mozart, you generally laugh and smile and he honestly wants you to enjoy the genius and light playfull like structure of his music. With Beethoven, he wants you to see what he sees, feel what he feels, dream what he dreams. Thus the life of a Romantic. Make sense?

Video of the Day - on that note, go see Immortal Beloved. It came out while I was in High School and has Gary Oldman playing a wonderful Beethoven. While the story is somewhat based on true episodes of Beethoven's life (his struggle with his younger brothers throughout life and his writing of many letters and dedication to an "Immortal Beloved" - but the revelation at the end of the movie was never proven accurate. While many scholars have guesses, no clear defined woman will ever emerge at this point. Something to ask him in Heaven someday;)

Webpage of the Day - Original score for Beethoven's Gross Fuge found in Pennsylvania and will probably sell for more than $2 million!!! Amazing. You can see how many times he wrote, rewrote, rewrote and rewrote again and again in his quest for perfection. Mozart on the contrast wrote most of his scores in first draft and claimed everything written was perfect and needed no alterations. Both were geniuses in different styles and approaches!

I leave you with a quote from Immortal Beloved that is always one of my favorites:

Exalt? Utter nonsense. If you hear a marching band does your soul exalt? No, you march. If you hear a waltz, you dance. If you hear a mass, you take communion.

It is the power of music to carry one directly into the mental state of the composer. The listener has no choice - it is like hypnotism.

On that note, HAVE A GOOD DAY!!!

Short Thoughts

So sorry about the lack of a long post yesterday. Obviously my dad liked the shortened post (I originally thought he liked the Sir Mix-A-Lot remake that I shared but he later told me it was his favorite since it was so short)...... I seriously felt noncreative in the morning when I got to work and things caught up fast so I never had a chance to find anything to talk about.

First off, congrats to the Astros for their win to send them to the World Series. What can I say, I'm a sucker for good baseball which always happens this time of year. Last year I was working in the lovely town of Tucson, AZ for a couple of weeks and spent every evening at my Grandmother's (who also lived in Tucson) watching the Incredible come back of the Boston Red Sox, then the sweep in the World Series. Good stuff. I predict Astros in 5 games. But then again, I can't make predictions lately.

Speaking of predictions, I did not win the lotto last night:( Blah! So back to work I go. There will be other chances. In fact, I didn't get a single number correct. I need a new hobby!

Red Wings are 6-1 already! Manny has been in net 100% of the season so far so after long last, he's the number one man. Should have happened a couple of seasons ago. And my boy Shanny leads the team in penalty minutes (he got all 19 of them in the first game!).

My roommate has me addicted to Apprentice which is on tonight. I have a thing for Kristi (although Rebecca's kind of cute too) and so yeah, I'm basically pulling for the cute girls to win at this point. I think it's funny how cocky and arrogant the guys are even though they work a lot better as a team than the girls. The girls are so funny to watch how backstabbing and caddy they can be. Toral is gone thankfully - she was annoying as can be with her arrogance and "I've worked too hard to get where I am and cannot jeopardize that by wearing a costume". I've wanted to wear an Easter Bunny suit to work for a while now. Call it a morale boosting event. Everyone knows the stupid things I like to do for attention, even while at work!

The Brews Brothers (bowling team) didn't do so hot last week. I blame our captain who was too busy making chartered boat reservations on Lake Minnetonka to stay focused on hitting the pins. PICK IT UP BOYS! I think I am joining the ranks again next week now that my concert will be over with. Lovely - back to my terrific average.

It's cold again here in Minnesota but that's the way it should be for October. Concerts tomorrow and Saturday nights in La Crosse - let me know if you're interested. No, I don't get any free seats but I get some kind of discount I think.

Song of the Day - I pulled out the original Baby Got Back after yesterday's inspiration. I'm playing with my new toy which I finally gave in and purchased - a new 80 GB USB2.0 harddrive that is seriously the size of two floppy disks. It's amazing how small it is and works off of USB2.0 for power so it is completely mobile like I have always wanted. Now I store all my MP3s on there to free up space on my harddrive. With my luck of harddrive crashings, can't lose all the weekends spent ripping my CD collection into MP3s. So yeah, go get a USB drive and fill it with multiple versions of Sir Mix-A-Lot.

Video of the Day - I finally watched Fever Pitch last night (Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon). It was pretty dang funny for those that like comedies with Fallon and those that like chick flicks. Seriously, I think everyone would like this movie. What's so incredible is how the Red Sox actually won the World Series when they were filming the movie.... how lucky was that? My new thing though is watching DVDs at faster playback. So I bump up the speed to 1.5x and watch a 90 minute movie in 60 minutes, thus giving me an extra 30 minutes of my life back. How sweet is that? Sure, everyone talks really fast but not too fast if you're paying attention. Plus the bullets sound like pop guns, it's kind of humorous. Try it sometime. I can only find that feature on my laptop, not on my DVD player at home.

Webpage of the Day - Mr. Hankie's brother withdrawals from Mayor race. Those crazy Canadians!

A Bothered Morning

So I was having troubles trying to think of what to talk about (yeah, I of all people had nothing to say for once) this morning. I've been in a mellow mood all week for some reason and I'm not entirely sure why. Probably way too many paint fumes this weekend or the fact that I haven't been sleeping well the past 2 weeks. I blame Iowa State Football for the reason I don't sleep much anymore. Again, I will not direct my anger towards the team.... just towards its pathetic coach.

On my drive in this morning I realized I need to vent - so here it is, today's list is:

5 Things That Really Grind My Gears
(with thanks to Peter Griffin for the phrase)

1. Rochester Construction that will NEVER end!! It has been 3 years now (probably more, conservative estimate) since they started Highway 52 construction (for all of you non-Rochesteronianites - Hwy 52 is one of two main arteries that allow us to get anywhere in town in under 5 minutes on a normal day) and all I've heard from the optimists of the world (yeah, usually I'm one of them... but not this morning) is how nice it's going to be when they are done. Well guess what? They are NEVER going to finish. They were supposed to have all 6 lanes open by October 1st and that date has come and gone and we're still swinging back and forth on the drive. It gets so bad at times that the traffic flow changes daily and the idiots talking on their cell phones not paying attention and almost hitting me. Frustrating to say the least. Which brings me to my next point......

2. Teenagers on Cell Phones while they drive. Plus in Rochester they are driving mom and dad's BMW, Lexus, or Audi or some other yuppie car (you know who you are.... if it starts with "J" and rhymes with "Jetta") and obviously don't pay their own insurance premiums with a car like that. The best is when I go work out in the mornings at 5:30am.... I always, yes ALWAYS, see some high school girl either in the car on her cell phone or at the RAC on her cell phone. Who the heck are they talking to at 5:30am? When I was in high school, the world didn't function till at least 7am. And in college, that turned into noon. Just get off the phones in general. And yes, I see high school guys on their cell phones as well, but sorry to say - there are 100 times as many girls on their phones as guys. Bout time their insurance rates caught up with the males rates after all these years.

3. Government in general. This is not a stab at the Republicans, although I could spend a week's worth of blogs on that - but both sides of the Government (or all 3 depending on what state you're from). I cannot believe how corrupt and crooked our government has become. Nobody trusts their Senators or Representatives, so why do we continue to elect them? Just because we have to and there was nobody better to vote for? And the office of President has no longer been a position of a role model, but one of ridicule for the rest of the world. It's the people that we put in there that have defiled it. Right now between the endless partisan arguments of the House and Senate, then all the corruption of the White House at so many levels... it's sickening.

4. The fact that Paris and Nicole are STILL not talking yet they are filming the 4th Season of Simple Life. How does that work? A bunch of rich b***hes acting too snooty is no longer flattering. I think they should duke it out in a mud wrestling pit (or jello) but I'm not sure how many people would actually watch that:) I'd probably be the only one! But seriously, you had a good thing going girls - and now that one of you is single and available (PH - call me!!) should be all the more reason to kiss and make up and entertain all of us males of America yet again. Does anyone else actually watch that show? I caught a couple of episodes each season mainly because of my love for Paris but it is actually quite entertaining despite how much of it is scripted anymore.

5. So much to complain about yet only one slot to go..... So take your pick: Overpaid whinny athletes, gas prices, the dating game and how sh**ty it is to play when you're 28 years old, crappy Quarterback for the Vikings that is not named Brad Johnson, the fact that I'm still not getting my callouses back on my finger tips after practicing for 3 hours last night and they hurt like hell today, my losing Powerball numbers preventing me from retiring at age 28, my neverending struggle with my horrific and pathetic love life (or lack there of), Lindsay Lohan's new look that she's STILL sporting (LL - call me!!), the new Daylight Savings that makes it impossible to get out of bed for this entire month, my Contra game that freezes up when I play it now on the original 8bit NES, or my truck that needs an oil change but I'm too lazy to take it in.

Wow - I feel better:)

Song of the Day - How about a little REM today? Everybody Hurts was a good quality song although not my favorite. I remember my brother loved that album "Automatic for the People" and that song when I was still in diapers. He was always listening to REM, U2, and Prince and I guess it just rolled off on me as I consider those to be some of my favorite groups. He was a true product of hitting his teenage years during the 80s, I was more of the early 90s. Yes, I'm a youngin!

Video of the Day - Still not too much to report as I was busy practicing and watching the amazing home run in the top of the 9th by Pujols (wow, that is really hard to spell.... "can you use it in a sentence please" - for all the SportsCenter commercial fans out there) to take it to game 6! Need to figure out a way to get a TV at rehearsal tonight so I can watch the game. That wouldn't be a distraction at all! Couple more years and the iPods will have that functionality... Kahn, you going to get one then???? hahaha

Webpage of the Day - All of a sudden I'm hungry for Pumpkin Pie now. I'll have to make some Pumpkin Bread (MY FAVORITE) and maybe some pie as well this weekend while in La Crosse. Does a 1500 pound pie cook evenly? If not, who's the lucky one that gets the not-fully cooked portion? I'll sign up!!! Yum Yum!!

Have a GREAT day!!

Painting Extravaganza

Sorry for no post with my weekend predictions of the games but based on my past history, I would have been wrong anyways. We won't discuss the events that occurred in Columbia, Missouri this past Saturday either. All I will say is McCarney better be gone after this season..... Coach - you're dead to me....

This weekend I finally painted the inside of my townhouse that I've been talking about for some time now. Last week I did the back hallway and the 1/2 bath and Friday/Saturday/Sunday I did the living room, dining room and kitchen areas. Thanks to the artistic help of my good friends Tanya and Jen, my place is looking pretty sweet right now!! After 3 days of paint fumes though, I still feel sick to my stomach.

Fireplace redone

Another shot of the Fireplace

Kitchen - underneath and up top

Dining Room

Back Hallway to the Garage

I'm pretty happy with it. Just exhausted - painting takes twice as long as you think it's going to by the way.

Sorry for the uncreative Blog today, tomorrow will be better.

Song of the Day - Eye of the Tiger by Survivor is on iTunes right now. I should reprogram my alarm clock to play this every morning to get me better pumped for the day! That'd be funny. There's no greater song to get you pumped up with adrenaline than this song in my opinion. Plus it makes a great Starbucks commercial.

Video of the Day - Not a lot of movie watching over the weekend except for another view of the new Family Guy movie. Pretty funny and yes Kahn, I will loan it to you when you get back!

Webpage of the Day - Commercializing the Beer Pong Tables? I don't think so.... my table is still the best of the MidWest!!!

Bond..... BigShow Bond....

So according to reports this week, it sounds like Daniel Craig is the new James Bond for the new flick (I believe the 21st of the series). I don't honestly have an opinion about Craig (mainly because I'm having a hard time remembering all of his roles) but I do have an opinion about who it should have been......

Five Reasons I'd Have Been A Good Selection For The Next Bond:

1) I'm MacGyver like - I know that's not usually something that is needed to be Bond, but it usually helps. You know, breaking out of hand cuffs while a bald guy says "No Mr. Bond, I expect you to die" or refinding your Mo-Jo (oops - wrong English Super Hero movie). But it seriously has to be an attribute of a Bond character. I am resourceful and I am even an Eagle Scout so that alone proves I know what I'm doing. Haha - whatever.

2) I like gadgets and cars - For anyone that knows me, I have more toys and gadgets then is recommended by the National Health Administration. Bond always seems to get the cool gadgets and toys and I would love to endorse these products. An iPod with a container for Captain Morgan in the side. So when you really think it's over, you can drink and listen to good toons. Or watch movies on the new iPod (no - I don't have one yet but holy crap is it tempting). Plus driving the latest model of BMW would be pretty sweet!

3) I love Vodka martinis - Vodka is my middle name. Or maybe I'm half Polish like Eddie. Well Eddie's 100% Polish but he doesn't like Vodka. Not sure I'm an expert enough to know what the taste difference between "shaken, not stirred" is - I'll leave that to you true alcoholics out there. I'm still an alcoholic in training.

4) I have charm and love the ladies - So it might not be the same charm as Pierce Brosnan or Sean Connery but my mom thinks I'm charming. Plus I would be a perfect gentleman for my "Bond Girl" costar. I'm thinking Brittany Murphy or Rachel McAdams would make great Bond Girls to star opposite me.

5) It'd be good for my singlehood - nothing would propel me higher in the ranks of "most eligible bachelor" than starring as the new James Bond. Plus it would be a good story to tell the grandkids someday.

Five Reasons I Wouldn't Make A Good Bond:

1) As Chris Farley once said: I have what doctors call a little bit of a weight problem. I could work a lot of it off if I was being considered for the role of Bond. But at this point, not sure people would line up around the block to see a fat bald guy wear an oversized tux and run around shooting people. Plus I wouldn't be able to hide behind corners or under tables when I had broken into the enemies room. The bad guys would see me from behind the column and just start shooting me where the other Bonds would go unnoticed.

2) I don't speak Russian or any other language - Not sure this is a requirement, but it always seems that James knows what's going on no matter what country he's in. You could have another space movie (Moonraker wasn't too bad though) where he meets aliens for the first time on Mars and of course Bond would know what they are saying. I don't even have an English Accent as most of the Bonds have had.

3) I'm a pacifist, can't kill anyone - even in the world of "make believe" (isn't Hollywood real?) I have a hard time welding a gun and aiming at someone. Plus I have very poor aim with a gun (although I find the Walther a very pretty gun... go figure).

4) Hard to find a stunt double that looks like me - Not sure how extensive that list would be but I'm sure they'd have to go way down on the list to find a double that is 6'6" and bald and tips the scales at 305 (per my driver's license..... none of us lie do we? haha). If it makes you feel better, when I did my fitness test a couple of years ago, they said I'm like 235 of just skin and bones and stuff.... with 0% body fat I could only weigh as little as 235. Yes, I've always been this big!

5) Wouldn't fit in the BMWs too well - Maybe they could make the first ever Bond Hummer. That'd be pretty cool. I could handle driving OVER the bad guys and through walls into the embassies. Yet again, another thing I could handle endorsing.

Song of the Day - in honor of Bond, I pulled up the Goldeneye title song that was sung by Tina Turner but written by The Edge from U2. He was credited as "Dave Evans" which is his real name. Good song and I like Tina Turner believe it or not. Go check it out on the new iTunes 6 that lets you buy videos:)

Video of the Day - so my favorite Bond was probably Brosnan just because that's my generation. But my favorite Bond movie was Goldfinger - I just think that was a classic Bond and Good vs Evil battle that will go on forever as a classic. Other good ones are The Man With The Golden Gun.

Webpage of the Day - On a somewhat related topic.... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2-1825056,00.html - PC goes to the next phase of turning our world into a ridiculous fiction novel. Too funny.

HAVE A GREAT FRIDAY!!!

This One's For The Children

Wonder how many times today's post will come up when someone does a search on Michael Jackson.

Anyway, today's blog is all about the little ones. These aren't all of the little ones out there in the world, but these are some of the ones that are special to me. So in no particular order:

My nephews...... Elliott will be 5 in February (holy crap!) and Al (Alexander but you can call him Al - if I can call you Betty) will be 3 at the end of November. Al and I share half birthdays with each other! Elliott is the one that started soccer recently so I included pictures of him doing that. Elliott is very left brained and so much like his dad (my brother Jeremy) and will probably end up being another doctor in the family. Al is very right brained from what I can tell so far and I think will grow up to be the engineer someday but that's just my bias opinion:) Both are adorable and love to laugh and smile. I've taken notes from Al as he seems to always be able to hit on the women wherever he goes.... he's my inspiration!

Next is Kaycee who is the adorable daughter of my cousin Cari. She looks just like her mother it's scary:) Kaycee also recently started soccer and will be 5 next year in April as well. Here you can see pictures of her visiting the dentist. Kaycee is extremely out going and will pretty much make friends with whomever is in the room with her. There are some cute stories of her going and visiting my great grandmother (her great-GREAT-grandmother) whom is still living in Nebraska. Kaycee lives in Nebraska as well and will unfortunately grow up under the regime of the Red and White of Nebraska Huskers:(

Hailey is a miracle. She was born in January to my friends Brad and Shelly. Unfortunately we lost Shelly right after that and I miss her dearly. She was one of the "sisters" I never had.... so now Hailey has become the "niece" I never had (yet). Hailey and I relate with the whole lack of hair issue. I was bald till I was two so she has a long way to go before she gets complete sympathy out of me! Here she is modeling her Halloween costume as a lady bug. She's crawling and Brad's spending many hours chasing her (he'll do that for the rest of his life):)

Then comes Emily. I was able to see Emily this past Saturday in Ames but she slept the whole time. Just like her dad - always passed out. Emily is the daughter of my good friends Jamie and Jill who still live in Ames... kind of. Boone county but Ames address. However that works. Jamie has tried to inadvertently killed me many times through college by ditching me in the wilderness at 1am and sending me to the emergency room after a sledding experience. I swear he aimed right for me! Emily is also crawling and is the most content child I've ever met. She's addicted to NASCAR already (maybe it's just the TV she's addicted to) and I have yet to really hear her cry.

Song of the Day - since we're talking about Kids, the only song going through my mind right now is of course Michael Jackson's Thriller. There's some good memories of many wedding dances to that song. Might be one of the greatest songs ever written in my opinion.

Video of the Day - new Netflix movies on the way today including Fever Pitch. I'll let you know how it is.

Webpage of the Day - This might have been more appropriate for the Britney Blog from Tuesday, but still made me laugh: http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005470508,00.html.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

Top 10 things I'll do with my PowerBall winnings

Power Ball is at $240 million. I have my winning ticket so I'd like to present the top 10 things I will do with my money starting tomorrow.

10. Pay off Student Loans - buy Iowa State a new Football team. Or at least get box seats so I can get drunk inside the stadium when they have another performance like they did last Saturday. See Monday's Post for my true feelings on this matter.

9. Build a house with Batcave-Style Underground garage. Not sure why this has always been a dream of mine, but I want an underground garage that is on giant lifts so when I leave my house, it rises up and I drive away, then it sinks back into the ground. Has grass and everything planted on top so it hides away in the ground where nobody can see. I've spent more time designing my dream garage than I have my dream house.

8. Open a Jimmy John's in Rochester next to IBM. I love this place (JJs, not IBM). I would love to open a franchise within walking distance for all the hard working and cheap engineers that work at IBM. Next to it would be a bar that I'd be bartending all the time when I'm not traveling. Only my friends and family (and other famous celebrities) could come into my club and have a drink with me. There would be NO Tequila and NO Whisky served. Bottomless glasses of Captain and Coke though! And all alcohol would be served in Goblets (even wine). I have a fascination with Goblets lately.

7. I'd buy an elephant and some llamas and fainting goats. Then hire Angie McCleary-Wheeler-Smith-Jones-Thompson-O'Rourke (DMV) to be their personal Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. (NOTE: Angie only has 2 last names, but the other ones are for emphasis that she has a long last name). She could teach my llamas to jump through flaming hoops, catch frisbees, and even protect my elephant from elephant snatchers. A couple of monkeys might be fun too!

6. Buy a Super Bowl commercial. I'd have an all white room with me wearing a white suit (Armani) and I'd just talk for 30 seconds about whatever I felt like. I'd try to have a live feed - that'd be pretty sweet. It might be about my family and friends, it might be about how I hate the Hawkeyes.... we'll see.

5. My new Bass! 5 Strings and everything! very pretty. Words can't describe the elegance of this thing. I know, mine is just fine, but I'd love that 5th string - plus it's fun to shop around. Cincinnati Bass Cellar has a ton of neat pictures and pricey basses that if you want to shop, I'd start there. Note that I had rehearsal last night and after not playing all summer, my fingers are pretty raw today. I'll be practicing tonight and all weekend so not to make a fool of myself again when playing this stuff.

4. My own restaurant. It'd serve only the best from around the world. Pizza from Zoey's pizza in Marion, IA. Gyros from Greenwhich Village, Sullivan's Steak from Tucson, Italian from Buca de Beppos in Minneapolis, Cheesecake from the place on the lower floor of Grand Central Station (the best I've EVER had), Calzones from Sam's Pizza & Deli in Cedar Rapids (no longer open but I would find the guy and get his recipe), Subs from Robbie's Subs in Poughkeepsie, and of course Hooters Hot Wings. Hooters girls are optional.

3. A totally pimped out Mini Cooper. I'd have it customized with all chrome and in Iowa State colors. With a big Cy logo on top (old school Cy of course). I'd have the Cyclone Fight Song as my horn sound and it'd have hydraulic lifts and everything. It'd be convertible so I could probably take it on golf courses since it's the same size as most golf carts.

2. A house in Fiji. Not sure why I'm always so obsessed with going to Fiji but it's between 70 and 75 every day of the year. I can handle that! Never rains, and of course it never snows. I'd want a house next to the ocean so I can hit golf balls into the ocean all day. Then I'd put on my scuba gear and go diving to pick up all my golf balls. That'd be awesome. Of course, any of you can come visit me whenever you wish! I'll have the helicopter pick you up once you get to Fiji.

1. My very own radio station! That way all of my friends can listen to my warped taste in music all day long. I'd be the only station to play "EVERYTHING BUT COUNTRY". And even then I'd let Pitzen have an hour a week when he can play his honkey-tonk stuff. Beethoven followed by Stone Temple Pilots, then some Mahler with some U2 on the side. How cool would that be? AND NO COMMERCIALS!!

Song of the Day - Speaking of Stone Temple Pilots - Sex Type Thing was on the radio last night on my way home and it's pretty sweet. They did that at the Velvet Revolver concert 6 months ago and it's still pretty cool even with a different band. Scott Weiland is insane but the best part of this song is the ascending guitar during each verse that hits mainly the harmonics. They didn't do that part during the concert:(

Video of the Day - Haven't watched anything worth noting lately. Too much baseball on and I had rehearsal so never saw a TV all night.

Webpage of the Day - http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/music/articles/20594519?source=Daily%20Mail Yoko Ono takes another cheap shot at Sir Paul. I could rhyme June with other things than Spoon.... Balloon, Raccoon, Cartoon, Name-that-Tune.... don't make me continue.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

My Dearest Britney,

Congratulations on the birth of Sean Preston. I am not lying when I say I am truly happy for you. I wish you and the new baby boy (whom I still have not received emailed pictures) only the best that life has to offer. I'm sure he resembles his mother and is quite the handsome boy instead of his irresponsible father who already has too many children that he has ditched over the past couple of years. I hope you are ready for a life of raising that child on your own - just a prediction.

I have done some extensive thinking lately and I feel that we are drifting apart. I know that with your marriage you have less and less time for me and I think that we need to finally call it quits. I hope we can both act like responsible mature human beings and go our separate ways. I wish this could be easier for me to say but I hope that you take it well and realize that I will always love you and deep down will always have a special place in my heart for you. But despite this, I can no longer keep hoping that things will change between us and that they will once again be how they used to be.

I know what the tabloids are going to think when they read this letter and I want them to know that while I still care for you, I have indeed moved on and found someone else. She is just as beautiful as you think you are but she talks publicly about sex far less than you do. She also hides her growing belly and other body parts better than you ever did. By the time you read this, the posters and cardboard cutouts of you are already gone (calendar is up for 3 more months of 2005 - has my vacation schedule written on it) and you will no longer have a visual effect around me during my day to day activities.

Someday you will find the urge to call me just to hear my voice but I will not be waiting by the phone. Feel free to leave a message and I will try to get back to you when I can.

My mother still says hello and thinks you were good for me but she realizes how much happier I am now that I've moved on. I hope someday you will realize what we could have had but you caused us to lose. I'm sorry for doing this, but it's entirely for the best.

All my love,

Adam

Song of the Day - Mötley Crüe - Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) - Yes, this is dedicated to you Britney. It expresses how I'm feeling inside right now. I also suggest you to not listen to How Am I Supposed To LIve Without You by Michael Bolton or We Can Work It Out by The Beatles. Another good one for you would be I Will Survive (either the original Gloria Gaynor or the kicka$$ Cake version). Perhaps you could do another remake of an older classic.... but that's Your Prerogative.

Video of the Day - A couple of movies I could suggest for you Britney - Sideways or Little Black Book are both cute and deal with breakups. Or even Swingers - "Sometimes it still hurts, you know how it is. Every day it hurts a little less and then one day you wake up and the pain is gone."

Webpage of the Day - Hoodoo Magic Spells for causing a couple to break up. Perhaps someone used it on us. Perhaps it was just you. Either way, this stuff's kind of weird and worth a look.

Theology 101

So I did a lot of soul searching and praying this weekend. I spent a lot of time with my Bible and trying to find out the answers to my questions. But I did come to one conclusion this weekend though - The Lord God, my Creator and in whom I put 100% of my trust and faith..... does not like Iowa State Football.

There is no humanly way that we should have lost to Baylor. It has to be the result of divine intervention. When people ask why God doesn't show himself or perform miracles as often as he did in the Bible days, they aren't looking at life's "other miracles". Baylor winning their first road game in the Big 12 EVER will forever rank up there with Moses parting the Red Sea, and the Angel saving the hand of Abraham from sacrificing Isaac. I think the Old Testament miracles were easier for Him to pull off than the Baylor Victory.

So there were maybe 8 Baylor fans and they brought with them 6 cheerleaders. Can you blame them? Who in their right mind would travel to Ames (where we have been pretty decent lately with a CRUSHING 23-3 win over the Squawkeyes) to take on the Cyclones who had a legitimate chance of making a run at taking the Big 12 North spot into the Big 12 Title Game? Those fans had a day they won't forget as ISU fumbled at the 1 yard line and at the 12 yard line at two different times to lose probably 14 points. You think I'd be used to losing by now.

The team seriously looked like the team of 1995-1997 where we won 3 games in 3 years. They would run on first down (not a huge issue but we'd gain 0 yards). Then on second down, they'd run the EXACT SAME PLAY!! Well it didn't work on first so on second down we lost 3 yards. When are people going to wake up and realize that McCarney is a horrible coach and needs to be put to sleep already!

I know that praying for a victory is not right as I'm sure there are folks on both sides of every game that pray for a victory. But I DO pray for our team to go out and play as hard as they can and up to their best levels. We failed to do that Saturday. We would have lost to Ames High School on Saturday.

So as I scanned through my Bible last night trying to find references to "Cyclones" or God's scripture on anything that might be related to Iowa State (no references to Iowa in the Bible from what I can tell) - I did stumble across the story of Job. Job is known as the most patient man who loses everything and finally questions God as to why. Granted I haven't lost everything and I have so much in my life that I am so thankful for, but I use Job as my inspiration to tell myself that if I just have patience, God will take pity on my Cyclones and deliver the big win to them eventually. Just hope it's in my lifetime.

Song of the Day - Another U2 one.... it's all I listened to on the way back from Ames in my depressed state of mind;) Running to Stand Still is the best song off of "Joshua Tree" who many call their greatest album. I disagree but won't go into that discussion now. But what disappoints me is all the folks that think "Joshua Tree" is the best U2 album, fail to see the amazement in the song that only has piano, a rhythm guitar, and some incredible lyrics. Go give it a listen today.

Video of the Day - I watched Dario Argento's The Card Player yesterday which is a foreign independent film. It was different (as are all of Argento's films) and pretty graphic in spots. But I wouldn't classify it as a "Horror" as some of his other works. The acting is horrible but you come to accept that in his films. I give it a 4 out of 10 stars.

Webpage of the Day - http://www.shoplaser.com/index.html - New thing I want for my car:) I know it'll piss off Stoen if I do so I think I'm going to get one!!!

Have a good day and a great week!

10. My most commonly miss-spelled word is definitely "definitely" - thank the nerds of the world for spell check!
11. Wish I would have paid more attention in Biology class. I think conversations with random cute girls about medicine are much more beneficial than discussing computers and "nano-meter" technology.
12. I could live a year off of gummy candy and pepsi.
13. I don't have enough money to run for president nor would most of you vote for me I think. I seriously would love to be president some day. Only after my stint as CEO of IBM. My mom would vote for me but I think she'd be the only person in my family that would.
14. There are too many pictures of my butt or me having obscene gestures for me to ever run for public office.

30. Is anyone actually still reading these? YA LOST YET?

Funny thing is I wrote all 30 of these within probably 15 minutes. My random thought generator is in high gear today for some reason.

Song of the Day - My coworker in Burlington hooked me up with some Guster for the day. They're a good band that reminds me of Bare Naked Ladies (older stuff from Gordon and Pirate Ship) and some mid to late 80s REM. Back when they were drugged up and happy all the time, not sober and mellowed out and not politically active because they're pissed off. I recommend it to anyone that likes good music.

Video of the Day - This is AWESOME!!! The Contra reference in #24 above reminded me of this clip where a guy completes all of Contra in 12 minutes. I can do it in one guy but I'm one of "those guys" that kills everything along the way. I bet I can do it under 20 minutes but the guy can really smoke through the waterfall level. I'm impressed. I'll time it when I get home. WARNING- LARGE DOWNLOAD SO MIGHT TAKE A WHILE BUT WORTH ALL 12 MINUTES.

Webpage of the Day - This is ridiculous. Woman kicked off a plane flight because of her shirt. I would have loved to have been in her position and started a great "discussion" with whomever was objecting to her BRILLIANT shirt. That's all I will say today!

HAVE A GREAT DAY! I'M LEAVIN..... ON A JET PLANE... BE HOME BY TEN-O'CLOCK A-M

A random blog today

I had the unfortunate position yesterday of being the one to break the bad news to Pitzen yesterday. I read that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are expecting a child and knowing Pitzen's life long love of Katie, I had to tell it to him straight. He didn't take it too well. Here's how the email went:

Me:
http://et.tv.yahoo.com/newslink/etsid48750012733/
sorry dude

Brian's response:
F***

Yes, he included the *** as to avoid problems with any filters. I haven't heard from him tonight but I figure he found a bottle somewhere to drown his sorrows in. I've been there buddy - I remember when I heard that Britney was married, then pregnant.... now just waiting for her to announce her divorce and then come crawling back to me!

So today is my last day in Burlington. I fly out tomorrow AM on the 6am flight out of here so I will avoid the storms all together and get home to a normal Fall. The other day I had a chance to see the Fab plant here in Burlington that is owned by IBM but used by many companies. They make semi-conductors here and it is one of the largest in the world). It was pretty amazing to see how they make the wafers that all the processor chips that you have in your cell phones, in your computers, and everything else you use every day. It's quite an extensive process and rather than have me bore you here with the nerdy details, you can visit this site to get a high level process (if that's possible). I got to wear a bunny suit which is required to keep the entire process so incredibly clean. Here's me (I'm the taller one... duh):

It's pretty cool to actually see all of this process when I spent a lot of time in college learning about it. Most engineers never get to see that.

Enough of the nerdy stuff. The Braves lost last night (dang), Angels won (yeah) and White Sox won (whatever). More importantly, the Red Wings are now 1-0 after a great start to the season. #14 Brandon Shanahan had 19 penalty minutes! YEAH!!! What a stud - 19 is a lot and takes some effort but he got a couple of 2 minute minors that lead up to a 5 for fighting (not the band) and 10 minute major. It happens when your team is up 5 to 1!

Song of the Day - Thanks to Kahn I have Possum Kingdom by the Toadies running through my head. It's one of my favorite songs of all time, not sure why though. A great tune and great lyrics..... Kahn, I sing this for you
And I'll promise you
I will treat you well
My sweet angel
So help me, Jesus

Video of the Day - The Village (M. Night Shyamalan - think Sixth Sense) was on TV this morning so of course I had to watch the ending again. It doesn't have the same effect the 2nd time around;) I remember seeing previews and was so excited to see it. Went with Drew and Kristi when it came out and I think all of us came out of there disappointed. It was a good movie, just that the "secret" wasn't as big of a deal as the fact that Bruce Willis was dead. Oops... I hope everyone reading this has seen that movie. My Dad is one of those that claims he knew that the whole movie.... whatever....

Webpage of the Day - http://www.nextpimp.com/nextel_ringtones_nintendo_2.html Nintendo tunes.... the Contra one is the best. Still can't figure how to get the WAV files on my laptop. Any suggestions? I hate Sprint because they don't have fun tones like this even though they are now with Nextel. I should look into that. Having the Contra or Mario theme as your ring would be pretty sweet!

ENJOY THE DAY!!! I FLY HOME TOMORROW!

oh yeah, I just hit my knee as hard as I've ever remembered hitting it before. Turned back into my desk here in the lab way too fast and hit the leg straight on. Been 3 minutes and it still hurts. There's your useless information for the day!!! You lost yet?

Guess Who's Back? Back Again....

So not much feedback from yesterday's post - not sure if that's good or bad. You should have learned by now that I never run out of things to talk about. Today starts the first of many many "Top Lists". I guess maybe the 2nd since I did list the best concerts that I've been to a couple of weeks back.

Remember that the NHL starts again today after a year off while they cry and complain about needing an extra million dollar raise in order to feed their families. I blame both the owners and the players when it comes to crap like that. The only losers out of the deal are us the fans that can't afford to go to the games anymore. No, I don't think I just called everyone reading this a loser.

But since I have nothing else to talk about today other than hockey, here are some of the rule changes for this year (for those who don't get out much) and my take on them.

New Zones - more room in the attack zone thanks to moving the goal line back two feet towards the end boards and the neutral zone is smaller as well. This gives more room for the power play and hopefully some more scoring opportunities. Most of the new rules were implemented to get more goal scoring. They've done the same with the NBA and with MLB by building smaller parks in order to get higher scoring which they feel is why people are out there. I hate seeing football type scores in baseball and it didn't work in the NBA (probably because all the players are too dumb to realize the changes) but I don't think the scores will be that outrageous this year. Less of a neutral zone is fine by me.

Two-line Passes.... GONE - this one's pretty cool. For those that never could understand what the two line pass was in hockey, well - it doesn't really matter anymore. There will be a HUGE advantage to the quicker skaters and break away goal opportunities will be increasing a ton. This seriously will make me watch a whole lot more this year!

Smaller Goalie Equipment - reduced "11 percent" and should allow more goals, or allow more dramatic saves by some of the game's best!

Goalie Trap Zone - there is a new triangle behind the net now... in that area and the area in front of the goal are the ONLY areas that the goalie can handle the puck. Sorry - guess it's called a "trapezoid" area. My bad. If the goalie handles it in the corners, it's a 2 minute minor penalty.

SHOOTOUTS - I was unsure about this, but there will now be NO more ties. I know a lot of the fair weathered hockey fans hate ties so I can see how this will help with the fans. After the 5 minute overtime (4 on 4 for that OT), if it is still tied (most likely will be) the teams send 3 players each in a shootout. Pretty sweet. I don't think this will pertain to the post season. That would suck. There's nothing better than Overtime Playoffs! Seriously.

There are some other rule changes but those are the main ones. I know I'm looking forward to it. GO RED WINGS!!!

So I'm correct with 2 of my 3 picks for baseball after yesterday. We'll see what happens today. GO BRAVES!!

Iowa State plays Baylor this weekend and I'll be at the game again. GO CYCLONES!!

I'm flying home Friday morning back to Rochester..... GO ME!!!!

Oh - and my nephew Elliott had another soccer game but did not score any goals. He still enjoys it though so I'm sure even Beckham didn't score in EVERY game he's ever played in. He'll pick it back up in the next game. GO ELLIOTT!

Song of the Day - the only thing on the radio anymore is Kelly Clarkson. Heard 3 different songs of hers on the way in this morning on 3 different stations on XM. Now I have the dang SINCE YOU WERE GONE going through my head. Although not a bad song, it does linger which I don't like one bit. She's doing well right now and I'm all for it as I think she was the best American Idol winner. The rest have just been crap.

Video of the Day - nothing new to share here. I see Robots just came out on DVD and I'm a huge Robin Williams fan so I'm excited to see it. Anyone have any reviews to share?

Webpage of the Day - http://tv.yahoo.com/news/ap/20051004/112846962000.html U2 gets an entire Conan O'Brien show to themselves on Thursday. Need to remember to tell the roommate to Ti-Vo it for me. That's gonna be pretty sweet! Only the greatest band alive gets that kind of treatment!

ENJOY THE DAY!!!

Busy Day?

So I thought about discussing the political matters that have come up the past couple of days..... but not in that mood today. I'd piss too many of you off I think. Maybe tomorrow. Send me an email if you want to hear it and I'll consider it.

This week has been pretty busy so far, just like last week. I've been frustrated at work with day to day issues, reading about things in the world gets me depressed at times with all the suffering and fighting. But last week I read this in one of my daily devotions and it hits home so well. I thought I'd take today to share it with you. (Thanks to Pico for this being his devotional email... let me know if you'd be interested in getting a daily devotional and I can forward it to you every day or have Pico add ya).

Read Psalm 104:1-9
Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, You are very great; You are clothed with splendor and majesty. He wraps himself in light as with a garment; He stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants. He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight; they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them. You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth.

Prepare to meet your God, O Israel! For lo, the one who forms the mountains, creates the wind, reveals his thoughts to mortals, makes the morning darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth -- the LORD, the God of hosts, is his name! -Amos 4:12-13 (NRSV)

MY day had been frustrating. I woke up to news of my nation at war and soldiers dying. I went to three meetings and listened to petty disagreements. My drive home included an encounter with an angry driver who cursed at me. When I walked into the house, I smelled something burning; I heard on the radio news of murder; and I read a list of who in the family needed to be where at what time and what needed to be repaired.

My head whirled. Then I saw the Bible open to the passage in Amos I'd read that morning. It offered me peace, calm in the storm, and God's power overflowing. I realized that God could change my attitude toward this chaotic day.

In a time of political chaos, Amos asked Israel to prepare to meet God. This morning, Amos reminded me that the weight of the world I live in is like a feather for God to lift from my shoulders. An hour ago I was frustrated, discontented, and weary. Now my frustrations look smaller, God looks big, and my hope is restored.

I again realize that everything I go through in a day is insignificant when compared to who's in charge upstairs. Something to help you through that next rough day. Another favorite of mine is Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Think about the power of that statement and realize it is very true! I try to live by that statement that's usually why I have very few fears in life. Those that know me that I have very few inhibitions and live life to the fullest. Mainly because I know that with everything I do, I have God at my side and his promise of having me live with him forever always on my mind.

Hope this helps someone out there. Like I said, I'm full of surprises for some of you out there.

Song of the Day - Thanks to Jen (Rochester's own 'J-Lo'), I have Wake Me Up When September Ends going through my head. That and XM Radio plays it every 5 minutes on a different channel. Plus it's the beginning of October (doesn't feel like it outside but imagine it is really October with me) so I'm awake now!! I'm going to remake the song and call it Wake Me Up When It's Payday or Wake Me Up When The Bathroom Is Free.

Video of the Day - So I know I'll hear crap about it, but I just finished watching the opera Tosca by Puccini on DVD. I would love to see it live someday because it's an incredibly rich and beautiful opera (one of Puccini's more famous Operas) that of course ends in tragedy. It's funny how all the classic stories (think about Shakespeare and about 99% of the Opera world) always end up in tragedy. I love Romeo and Juliet because of the strength of love but also the tragedy it brings. That's kind of how Tosca goes as well - a woman who betrays her lover and puts his life in danger thinks she has done the right thing to eventually save him. In the end, her plan fails and he ends up dead, so she kills herself. You lost yet? That should be the new title of my blog page... You Lost Yet?

Webpage of the Day - Fainting goats..... I want one! Wonder if my Home Owners Association would let me have one. I'd keep it chained to the house!! Thanks again to Wyatt for the suggestion.
Have a great day!!

Oh yeah - Happy Birthday Paul - you old man you!

Hiking in Burlington

No, not hitch-hiking although I find it safe enough here that I could go hitch-hiking. So after getting every pick wrong from Saturday, I think I might be the worst fortune teller in the history of the earth. Dang Cyclones had a chance but as they always do with McCarney at the helm, they can't win the games that matter! Dangit!

Went hiking on Sunday with my teammate from Rochester. He found us Camel's Hump about 30 miles from Burlington to go climb up since it was so perfect of an afternoon. It was a lot of fun but showed how out of shape I am still even though I have been working out this past year and losing weight. I can do 3.5 miles on the elliptical machine no problem, and do 30 minutes on the stairmaster without problems... but do some actual hiking on multi-level terrain is something totally different. No, I didn't make it to the top although after looking at these pictures, I'm kind of wishing I would have gone the full way. There is no snow up there but a ton of trees and most of them have started to change colors. Was just nice to get out in the middle of nowhere and enjoy nature.

Here are some pictures to enjoy that I took. Might actually frame one or two of these for my new townhouse:

It was a good afternoon to say the least:) This week I'll still be here in Burlington, not sure about the whole week or not - depends on how work goes the next couple of days. But on tap for sure yet is a visit to the Headquarters of Ben & Jerry's!! I'll let you know how that goes!! They don't make ice cream on Saturdays, Sundays, or Mondays so I'll have to go on Tuesday for lunch. I think it's only about 20 minutes from here. Yum yum.

Sorry for the short post today but figured I'd keep it short today for once. If you can call this short!

Song of the Day - So I finally watched Purple Rain the movie with Prince/Symbol-Man/&$^! (mix all of those together to make his symbol)/Artist formerly known as Prince/Artist... it's a weird movie and the acting is pretty bad but I now have Purple Rain going through my head which thanks to Jeff K from my buddy Chad's wedding last year (Happy Anniversary Chad and Courtney btw - on Saturday), I now consider that one of the greatest slow songs EVER for a wedding. Going to have this going through my head all night though I'm afraid:(

Video of the Day - Per Rachael (my sister-in-law) - I watched Eulogy. Interesting movie with Rip Torn, Ray Romano, Kelly Preston (who is one of the hottest women on the planet I've decided... just go watch Jerry McGuire... on second hand, watch the first 10 minutes when she's screaming and .... then shut it off before it gets shitty for the next 110 minutes)..... but it also has Hank Azaria who does half the voices on the Simpsons!!! He was pretty funny as he always is. Back to Kelly Preston... she plays a lesbian who is getting married to Famke Janssen so that alone is reason to watch:)

Webpage of the Day - I'm in an artsy fartsy mood again today (get used to it) so here's something to appease your visual senses (no not more pictures of Kelly Preston although that's a thought). http://www.liquidsculpture.com/galleries.htm Liquid Sculpture has some incredible pictures of drops.... you have to go there to see what I'm talking about. But my favorites are in the Milk and Cream section, and some of the Squirts section. The Pournography section is pretty funny too! I hope you enjoy this one - it's quite unique!

Have a great day! And a great week!!!
