A Long Fall Ahead

No blog today - not much to really get excited about after a poor poor poor performance last night.

Have a good weekend

The Art of the Megaphone

GO Cyclones!!!

The concert last night was pretty kick ass. Only way to describe it! Pros: It was pretty sweet to see Alice in Chains - they were one of the better opening bands I've seen in a long time! Cons: When they started playing Them Bones, I instantly felt REALLY OLD!!! As it reminded me of my senior year in high school and I realized that was 12+ years ago. Highlight of their set: The overweight drunk guy with the tattoos and long gottee dancing and serenading the security guy. He was very entertaining and was fine until he groped some girls and was "escorted" out by security.

Oh yeah, the original opening band was Kill Hannah. They sucked. At least they kept it short. I'll give you $5 if you can sing a song by Kill Hannah without using Google or other web search.

THEN comes Velvet Revolver. I saw them last about 3 years ago after their release of Contraband. They now have 2 albums to play from their "Velvet Revolver" era... but some 12 albums when you include the repertoire from their "STP" and "GNR" days. Last night's performance was much more of a total performance by the entire band. First concert was a Slash highlight reel. Scott Weiland kicks ass as usual, but there's something amazing about watching one man who should be listed in the program notes as "lead singer and Megaphone virtuoso". For any STP fans, you'll realize that he's always had a fascination with the megaphone (think Dead and Bloated.... one of the greatest CD intros I know of). He even has the fancy version with the siren function!!!

So a standard rock concert, loud and clear (Excel is 100x better for concerts than the Target Center.... verified last night), and VR plays so well together! And if you're unfamiliar with the VR tunes, that's ok as they pulled out some GNR/STP tunes that EVERYONE will recognize. Vasoline (STP) was the first noticable one, but then the greatest 10 minutes of my 2007 came with Interstate Love Song (STP) followed by Patience (GNR)..... does it get any better than that?

Encore had a flashback to their last tour where they pulled out Sex Type Thing (STP) and Mr. Brownstone (probably my least favorite GNR song), and even Wish You Were Here (Pink Floyd).... Then SLITHER!!!

So my 2nd viewing of Velvet Revolver live... even better than the first. Played like the experienced band they actually are, not like a bunch of individuals thrown together. Visual overload at times as they integrated the video screen that circles the Excel Center into their lighting so now the visual effects are surrounding you! Lots of lights flashing, no open flames/pyro this show unfortunately:( What happened to the age of explosions at concerts?

As for the Megaphone? I would hope that when you make your list of "Greatest Megaphone Operators" in Rock and Roll History, Scott Weiland is at the top of your list. Oh yeah, and feel free to include Slash on your top 5 "Guitarists"..... well deserved! Duff on bass probably could make top 10. And I'm very biased toward Scott Weiland.... won't discuss vocals.

Anyway - sorry for the late post. Have to keep taking a break to go get coffee to stay awake!

GO CLONES!!! Prediction: Cyclones 33, Kent State Golden Flashers 13. What the heck do you use as a mascot for "Golden Flashes"? An eagle wearing a trench coat running in front of windows?

Entertainment of the Day - I forgot to mention that I saw Supertroopers on Comedy Central this past weekend. That movie is quickly rising on my list of favorite movies to the elusive "top 3"! I cut in at one of the best parts.... SHENANIGANS!!! (Warning - R rated language)

A Full Schedule for 24 Hours

So my favorite sports to watch are (in order):
  • Cyclone Football (only when we win)
  • Stanley Cup Finals
  • Super Bowl
  • US Open Tennis.... night matches
And although it's only the first week (1st and 2nd round) when the matchups are a little lopsided (similar to the first few weeks of college football when USC plays Montana State College of Technology..... the "Fighting Clouds") but they're still fun to watch. Last night was my first opportunity of 2007's tournament to watch the night round. Maria Sharapova killed her opponent, and then Andy Roddick sent Gimelstob into retirement with actually an entertaining match between two really good friends. But now that Andre's not around for the first time in my lifetime??? I'm rooting for James Blake - he's a lot of fun to watch.

As for Cyclone Football (only when we win) -that will happen tomorrow night as we kick the crap out of Kent State in Ames! CYCLONE COUNTRY BABY!!!!

But before that happens, it's Velvet Revolver tonight in St. Paul. Who is that you may ask??? VR is the "new" band that was formed by Slash, Duff, and Matt Sorum (think.... Guns N Roses) and Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots (he was in and out of rehab 10 years before LiLo... back when it meant you were a "rebel", not "spoiled"). They picked up Dave Kushner (Wasted Youth for anyone that remembers them) to form Velvet Revolver.

This will be the 2nd time I will see VR and the first time to see Alice in Chains. "Alice in Chains is still together?" you may ask.... well kind of. You'll recall that lead singer Layne Staley died in 2002 of a drug overdose. Or you may not since 98% of the press that was on the death of Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopez (think... TLC.... "Don't go chasing waterfalls" - the most overplayed song of my senior year in high school). Well Staley DID in fact die, the band disappeared for most of the early 2000s, but is back with William DuVall singing. Jerry Cantrell is still the center of the band and they're going strong... although never as strong as the mid 90s.

How's that for a musical lesson? None the less, should be an AWESOME show tonight!!!

And Sarah says "thanks for the kind words"... hope she knows what she's in for! haha!

Haiku of the Day
My girlfriend Sarah,
Yeah.... she pretty much kicks ass!!
I'm a lucky guy!

Entertainment of the Day - I watched the NEW TMNT movie (that's "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" for the unknowledgable) last week.... brought back fond memories of the cartoon (I had a thing for April O'Neil). It was nice that they kept it as a continuation (Shredder was defeated rather than back from the dead), rather than a remake or ignoring all the comic books. It was aimed for kids as it was a CGI. There were some good "extras" on the DVD talking about how the movie was made with CGI. Master Splinter was interesting to see how they got him created with CGI. If you enjoyed it as a kid... you will enjoy it as an adult. Otherwise, no! BTW - remember the video game for NES? Here's a review by the Angry Nintendo Nerd (R rated for language but still funny).

Weblink of the Day - Drew pointed out a 60 foot backyard slide (with jump at the end)... how would you like to be the first one to test out if the pool is placed correctly??? Fun times!

Public Service Announcement

girl·friend - [gurl-frend] –noun
1. a frequent or favorite female companion; sweetheart.
2. a female friend.

So I'll cut to the chase - yeah, I'm dating someone... and here's your chance to meet her! I would have introduced her yesterday but I got behind quickly at work.

Please give a warm welcome to Sarah! Sarah lives in Chicago and she and I have been communicating via email and phone for about 2 months now. Finally, last weekend I went to Chicago to meet her. Then we went to Iowa for a wedding this past weekend and we're now officially "an item". How'd I do it? Well I had a friend deliver a note to her asking if she'd "go" with me.... no, not "go out" with me - in 7th grade it was "will you go with me?" Well this awesome girl actually said "yes"!! We'll be together for labor day at a DIFFERENT wedding in Iowa (these two are actually for her, I'm all done with my weddings till next year I believe).

Sarah's pretty kick ass so far - we're very much alike in many ways and respect the differences that are bound to exist. So give a warm welcome to my new "girlfriend"! Yes, this means I'm off the market! And she's my new "favorite female companion"!!

SURPRISE, MOM!!!!

Here are a couple of pics to share - some from my trip to Chicago last weekend, some from this past weekend in Iowa.

Anyways - everyone say hi to Sarah and be extra nice to her!!! Hopefully the good luck I've had recently will transfer over to my beloved Cyclones! 2 DAYS TILL KICKOFF!!!!

Did you see the Lunar Eclipse at 4am this morning? Here are some web images in case you missed it!!

Final Stretch of August

It's Friday - Time to get ready for the weekend which means sitting at work waiting for the time to pass.... a usual experience for me on a Friday!

This is the last Friday without Football predictions..... So in my own "preseason", here are some of my predictions for this weekend:
  • Now that David Beckham is playing soccer in the US, 5 additional viewers have been watching MLS on TV - maybe an additional 10 tickets per game have been sold (at the chance of running into Posh Spice!)
  • Nicole Richie checked into Jail on Thursday for her 90 hour sentence... I predict that she won't serve the entire 90 hou..... WHAT!?!?!? She was released after 82 minutes? Well that was just dumb. What'd they do - give her Cat and the Hat and tell her to read it, then she could leave? Wow!! Guess driving while stoned is an 82 minute punishment.
  • Videogames will get recalled next week due to lead being mentioned somewhere in the game. Even virtual lead made in China can be hazardous to our children!
  • Michael Vick will be rejected when he applies at PetSmart after he gets out of jail. "Conflict of interests" will be listed as the reason for rejection.
  • Lindsay gets "1 Day" in jail.... she'll come in for a photo shoot then be allowed to leave.
  • It's gonna rain in Rochester sometime this weekend.... I know, really stretching it here on this one.
  • Hurricane Dean will fade faster than Howard Dean from the Democratic Caucus race.

Haiku of the Day
LiLo's off to jail
She will probably be there
Longer than Rehab

Entertainment of the Day - Have you seen Disturbia yet? It recently came out on DVD and is the new "remake"ish of Rear Window. It was AWESOME! The kid from Transformers is confined to his house for a summer and begins spying on his neighbors with lots of high tech gadgets that no high school kid should have! Just an observation. It was well done and plenty of thrilling moments.

Weblink of the Day - Have you seen the "Snap a Party" - an all in one serving set? Includes a plate, fork (only the dinner fork), knife, spoon, chop sticks, napkin ring (although what for?!?!?) AND - toothpick. Interesting concept but they're running about $3.50 a setting... is it worth it when you won't end up using the chop sticks?

Your "Trusted and Un-Biased" News Source

World News
Hurricane Dean (no, not Howard Dean.... although remember his tirade 4 years ago that led to his name being a household name? Pretty much acted like a hurricane... YEAH!!!!!!!!) is pounding Mexico with wind and rain. I bet you can get some awesome rates on resorts in Cancun this weekend! Just another reason to watch gas prices rise this weekend as we approach Labor Day (when they "should" start going down by conventional theories). Good luck with that. Funny how $2.40 sounds like a good price for gas.

National News
Still way too much pre-election talk going on BUT did you see Barack on The Daily Show last night? Can't help but get excited when this guy speaks due to his professional and educated presence. His best line was when asked about the media focus on his "inexperience".... he said that on paper, remember that Cheney and Rumsfield were both "extremely experienced" but look how horrible that turned out. That's a great point!!

Also have to bring up the new theory on what caused the Minneapolis bridge collapse... I don't make this stuff up!

Sports
I'll only highlight stuff:
  • Texas Rangers scored 30 runs in a baseball game - that's as many scores as Lindsay Lohan's coke habit in one evening....
  • Saints and Chiefs play preseason football tonight.... so it's the "Holiest of Holies" vs the "Native American BigWigs... but not as offensive as some of the college football mascots for some reason"
  • Braves struggle YET AGAIN with the shitty Reds - Spankees only 5 behind the Red Sox.
  • No golf league tonight - went to the range last night and the swing is coming along. Just need to get my consistency up.

Weather
Today in Rochester? "T-storms with 80% chance of rain"
Tonight? "Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms..."
Friday? "Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms..."
Saturday? SUNNY!!!
Sunday? Mostly Sunny
Monday? Mostly Sunny
Tuesday/Wednesday? "Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms...."

Pretty easy weather to predict up here lately!

Health News
In an article that will scar you all day long..... "Sexed-up seniors do it more than you'd think" is the headline on this one. The 2nd paragraph says it all - "That may be too much information for some folks".... I agree!

Powerball News
The numbers 05 09 35 40 47 (powerball 41) were NOT selected last night so I'm at work yet again today.

Closing Note
7 Days till Kick Off!! GO CLONES!!!!

Birthday Wednesday

Happy Birthday Jill!!! Are you 21 yet?:) Your present came yesterday with the late move by your husbands driver spinning Gordon out of the way. I'm sure you both loved seeing that! And thanks Brian for sending me pictures of your TV screen - very classy.

More rain last night - more rain this morning - more rain tonight.... and more storms tomorrow.... seriously! Golf league is finished as the course is one big puddle right now. Is it considered a water hazard when the entire green is one big lake?

So my thoughts about Michael Vick and his dogfighting "guilty" plea.... what an idiot. The best is his comments from a few months ago where he's wearing like three hats and looks total "thug" style and says "I'm not guilty" or whatever. Living the thug life now! Looks like I'll remove him from my fantasy football list for a long time! But other quick sporting news to point out - Santana and his 17 strikeouts for the Twins the other night!!! HOLY COW!!! Boy is showing off why he's the best in the league! They should name a hurricane after him, instead of Howard Dean.

We're a little over a week away from kickoff to the (hopefully) AWESOME Cyclone football season. There was a vote going on to help decide the new helmets to go along with the new uniforms for the new coach in the new season with a new WINNING record. How's that for new? I voted for the cursive Cyclones which is still my all time favorite helmet. May have to go buy one for my mantel now. Click on the helmets in the middle of the page to see what they'd look like with the uniforms. Have to wait 8 more days to see how they look in real life!

US Open starts this weekend. Arthur Ashe Kid's Day is Saturday in Queens (in case anyone's in the neighborhood). It's a fun day with lots of stars - plus it means next week starts the late nights of watching AWESOME TENNIS!!!

And just throwing this next article out there for awareness...... don't overdose on redbull (don't have to worry about me.... haven't touched the stuff since Drew's wedding).

Haiku of the Day

Entertainment of the Day - Yeah, haven't exactly watched any movies lately, so we're back to music listening. Velvet Revolver Concert is NEXT WEEK!!!! But today we're going with some Garbage (the band, not the stuff they are collecting today on the SW side of town). I'm Only Happy When It Rains is from the first Garbage album ("Garbage") and here's the strange video for you. Don't know that I've ever seen it myself (since MTV never shows videos post 1993).

Weblink of the Day - An unusual collection of cartoons that was passed on to me yesterday. Some are really amusing, some are strange. A lot of nerdy ones. Give it some time and cycle through them to get addicted... I started you out on a funny one.

Photo Day!!!

I was going to call it "Picture Page" but figured the trademark police would get after me.... remember this???? I think that was on Nickelodeon? Or was it Saturday Morning only? Just remember watching Bill Cosby draw pictures in front of the camera and entertaining himself as he usually does so well.

But I finally got through my Nebraska Wedding weekend photos to share. Try this link to view them all as a guest. I switched to Shutterfly which allows guests to view the photos if they have a direct link. Couldn't figure out Snapfish enough to know if there's a way to do that.

NEBRASKA WEDDING PHOTOS. You can click on "Slideshow" at the top of the 2nd screen. You'll start with Millie the pig!!! She's very cute and well trained. If you want a larger version of some of the photos (good for printing, etc), let me know and I'll send them to you directly.

I also came home last night to see 6-7 hummingbirds flying all around my feeders. I am now having to fill both feeders on a daily basis since they are GOING TO TOWN on the food. Here are all of my photos of them if you're interested. Hummingbirds are a pain to try and photograph. Here are also a couple of highlights:

And the final picture for today is a picture of my present from my cousin Drew that he picked up in Iraq for me. If you don't like spiders, then you won't like this thing..... it's a camel spider which dwell heavily at night in the Iraq area. IT'S HUGE!!! and they get a whole lot larger over there. Thanks Drew!!! I put my pen there to get an idea of the size of this thing.

Haiku of the Day
Spiders are better
than snakes in most people's minds....
I don't mind either

Entertainment of the Day - It was pointed out to me that the new advertising slogan for Think Bank (formerly Think Credit Union, formerly IBM Mid America Credit Union or something like that) is from a Talking Heads Song.... with the change away from a credit union, they are trying to tell everyone "same as it ever was".... "and you may find yourself..... " . Once In a Lifetime - Ring a bell now? You'll now view the ads around Rochester in a different light now. Here's the video if you have the time. These guys were WEIRD!!!

Weblink of the Day - As if you need more to distract you this morning... move the blocks around so you can get the red one out.... first one was ok, 2nd one gets a little trickier!

Welcome to Monsoon Season

Who needs sun in August? I think the saying goes "August Showers bring September Cyclone Victories"..... or something like that. We got some 11.1 (NW side of town) inches of rain this weekend which caused heavy flooding, and even some fatalities in the area between here and the Mississippi river in Winona (less than an hour away). My house is still standing, no water came in through my open windows (enjoying the incredibly cool evenings for August), and my rain gauge was over filled with water (holds 6 inches). (raining again RIGHT NOW.... guess no Jimmy Johns for lunch:( )

I'm in the middle of another yearly hummingbird feeding war with my neighbor. She has 1 feeder and I have 2 up. I just changed to my Aunt Nyla's recipe after returning from Nebraska and I'm now winning by a land slide!!! Only problem is now I have 3 Hummingbirds flying from feeder to feeder and draining the juice in about 3 days! It's just sugar water, but they love it. I'll see if I can get some good pictures this week of them to share.

New special Shiner beer is out there... anyone have it available and could pick me up a 6 pack (and figure out how to get it to me!!). Trying to do the youtube embed in my myspace page:

I haven't had a Shiner in a while, need to go look for it. This is "98" in anticipation of their 100th Anniversary in 2 more years. Please plan on a party in Shiner, Texas at that time! BTW - I have been able to find FatTire beer lately through my travels..... had plenty of it last weekend in Lincoln (ON TAP!!) and now I have a 32 oz. bottle at home to enjoy if the weather ever gets back to typical August weather. Need to get FatTire to Minnesota!!!

One other funny thing.... heard a radio station talking about a "mystery band" and played the song for people to enjoy. They are not revealing the band's name till the end of August, but I have it figured out (not the easiest web search this morning... but definitely found it). The reason not to reveal the band's name is so people learn to like the song before judging it based on the band who is releasing it. Well I'll let you in on the secret - I don't think the song is that great, and not just because it's from the new HANSON album either.... go to their myspace page and click on the "The Great Divide" link to listen to it. MMMmmmm Bop!!!!

Entertainment of the Day - Listening to the Poison Cover CD again this weekend reminded me of how great the Poison videos were.... so I found them on youtube for you (one of the top 5 internet inventions in my book)....

Weblink of the Day - Interesting news on IBM and Sun joining together to sell hardware/software.... Sun and IBM are usually very much at competition against one another. See how this pans out long term.....

Taste of Fall

It feels B-E-A-UTIFUL outside right now. Makes me hungry for fall and the beautiful weather ahead of us. Unfortunately, Summer still isn't over but we're just that much closer to Labor Day. Also that much closer to Rove hitting the road!

Golf sucked last night. I did have probably the best drive of my life on the last hole, but that was about it. Fun week next week then we're done.

Did you see this??? National Cannonball Championship in Toronto..... why wasn't I notified? Although I've never been good at the cannonballs - I could be Drew's coach/trainer though. I do think he holds the record for highest splash at everyone's favorite backyard pool. The guy who won is from Calgary and decided that he'd wear a pink tutu for his competitive splash. Another competitor made outfit changes from Princess Leia or Thriller zombie.... anyway, winner took home 2 grand in Canadian dollars which is like $4,000 US.

New Lego video game is coming.... the popular (and very fun!) Star Wars game now proceeds to following the Indiana Jones Trilogy! Lots of potential to be fun, but I admit that I'll have to go rewatch the movies as part of getting through the video game is following the basic plot of the movies.

Anyway - HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!!! Enjoy the nice fall weather!

Haiku of the Day

Entertainment of the Day - Picked up the new Poison CD from the library last night. Yeah, the same Poison that was big in the 80s and then disappeared for 20 years. They do a bunch of covers and it's not good, but it's not bad.... kind of hard to describe..... Kind of like a Pauly Shore movie - you don't enjoy it, but you don't turn it off.

Weblink of the Day - 30 second bunnies present... SAW!!!! It's not nearly as gross but still funny. I seriously love the bunnies!

Random Thoughts

Today is the anniversary of the death of Elvis. There have been numerous celebrations around the country marking the 30 years since his passing - including a new car by Junior for NASCAR that has the King on the car.... pretty sweet, but no #8 next year. Car will be seen at Richmond in September.

But we're also celebrating today the fact that kickoff is now only 2 weeks away! So celebrate with me by using this picture of True Cyclone Power as your new desktop (or printed off and on your door like I have it). GO CLONES!!!!

And if you think you're being a bad parent by telling your child "no".... read this and you'll realize what a true bad parent does. Britney takes the crown for "shitty parent" by giving her kids caffiene, yelling at them, and even trying to whiten their teeth!!!

Cool weather has returned for a few days to MN and I am again a happy camper with the fresh air. Lows in the lower 50s at night (even in the 40s?!?!?!) and highs in the 60s this weekend. Even the weather is starting to show signs of being ready for football. I suppose it's also time to change my ringer to the Fox NFL theme again!! Unless someone can find me a good (non-marching band version) mp3 of the ISU fight song. Not happy with those lately. Should also be perfect weather for golf tonight.

Enough rambling for today... TOMORROW'S FRIDAY AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS!!!!!

Entertainment of the Day - We're also less than 2 weeks from the Velvet Revolver concert!! I had a Stone Temple Pilots 2 hour time slot on my drive back to Minnesota on Monday. I don't know that they put out any bad songs on their 5 Studio CDs!! Just one man's opinion though.

Halfway Through August!

Happy Birthday Rachael!

Spring feels like it's here as we're getting yet another thunderstorm this morning with more rain! So all the rain we've been missing for the past month is rolling in right now. Plus it will be highs in the 60s this weekend! I think I'm going to cry I'm so happy! Did we ever figure out why there isn't a Groundhog for Summer to predict when the first day of Fall will arrive? August 2nd (6 months from the real day)! If the Groundhog emerges from his air-conditioned hole and faints due to the heat and humidity, there will be 6 more weeks of summer, otherwise if he comes out of his hole and lights up a grill, it could be an early fall.

Speaking of outside - my new birdfood has corn in the mix which is a very bad idea to put above your grass..... so now I have little stalks of corn growing in my yard. I'll move it over the cemented area next year I guess.... bad idea this year!

Since nobody thought it was a good idea to televise a baseball game during primetime last night while I was at home (the Twins are on the west coast, they came on around 9) - I was forced to look for something else to have on in the back ground while I was doing things around the house. Up came the FINALE of America's Got Talent-Idol RipOff...... or something to that effect. This is the show that is NBC's lame answer to Fox's Idol and has Jerry Springer hosting, and David Hasselhoff (no crying on this show), some British Guy (sound familiar yet?), and Sharon Osbourne who like her husband, is hard to understand. I barely watched it, but the performance that continued to make me wonder "what the hell was that" was the high school girl Julienne Irwin who sings as her talent (are you sure you're on the correct show?). She was dead awful folks. Her pitch is horrific and I can't figure out why she's a "finalist". The Musician guy on guitar was ok - didn't see much of the other two. But seriously.... SHE SUCKS!!!

But maybe she's more suited to be on the show that followed - this Singing Bee show which was amusing for the first 5 minutes, then just painful after that. It's Karaoke style entertainment to see if people remember the words to songs. Usually they don't, but more importantly - their singing makes you cringe!!!

New movies coming out soon:
  • New Mr. BEAN!!!!! Since the last one did so well (sarcasm). But honestly, just borrow my Mr. Bean DVDs of his original show - much much funnier.
  • New Halloween....well actually it's the original one "re-imaged" but from Rob Zombie. Should be interesting since he is usually over the top gory. Classic film though so hopefully worth watching (on DVD of course)
  • The King of Kong - two old guys go for the Guinness World Record on Donkey Kong!!! What a great premise for a movie!
By the way, I finally played some Super Mario 2 last night after probably a 15 year break. Graphics are still pretty poor (Mario 3 was the large improvement) but now we've integrated playing 4 different characters and if you use Princess, a slight ability to fly! Plus the music is probably a little more annoying than Mario 1.

Haiku of the Day -

Lucky for my blog....
"America's Got Talent"
..... se-ven syl-lab-les!!!!!!

Entertainment of the Day - Still never got to the final movie from a while back. I rented The Return (with Sarah Michelle Gellar who is now being type cast in these weird Japanese horror flick remakes..... and all of the remakes suck). Plot was dumb - had to go to a web discussion to figure out what had happened in the movie. Acting wasn't much better. She should have stuck with Buffy on the WB..... people didn't watch that much either but at least they knew it was there!

Weblink of the Day - For those, who like me, were having Homestar withdrawal during their recent hiatus.... They've been busy catching up with a new cartoon and a new Strongbad email....

Lots to Comment On

I'm back in the office today playing catch up. Had a wonderful trip to Nebraska and after way too hot of temperatures, a wonderful wedding with family, and of course some Runzas.... back to the norm here in Minnesota! I'm WAYYYY behind in my commentary here:

Merv Griffin died this past weekend at the age of 82. He was the man behind the creation of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Those are probably the #2 and #3 most successful game shows on TV (Behind Price is Right of course... but that's on the decline now that Bob Barker is done). Plus they are the two games that are usually reserved for "intelligent" folks, instead of being pure luck. Jeopardy is in the middle of Teen Week which makes me feel a lot smarter knowing I can at least keep up with the 17-18 year olds at Jeopardy.

Tiger wins yet again. You have to respect the guy now that he's a mature champion. I was not a big fan of his initially but now that he's the most recognizable athlete on the planet, you can't help but root for him. Better than laughing at Sergio continue to choke and either lose or even be Disqualified!!! That's a separate discussion that I think he got screwed on. It's 2007 - use technology like every other sport.

Football is on TV again.... preseason so it is like watching baseball spring training.... does anyone really care?

Karl Rove is on his way out of the White House!!! The man I pretty much call the evil enabler of the evil twins is done making negative headlines for the Bush Administration. Problem is, he's probably responsible for keeping Bush's approval rating over 20%.... see what happens with him gone and out of the picture. He should be serving jail time or at least pardoned by his buddy Bush.

Elvis died 30 years ago this week. He would have been 72 if still alive today for reference.

I still hate August and the summer heat. I know we have been getting a lot of rain lately here in Rochester, but it's still too humid for my liking. The summer heat wave in Nebraska this past weekend was not good to me. I'll post pictures soon once I have time to go through a lot of them and find the good ones!

Want to get this posted so y'all have something to read.... I'll be back to "normal" the rest of this week!

Va.... ca.... tion.....

I have a 6 hour drive in front of me today, but on the other end is my Grams - a daily reader and one of my biggest fans!!! I'll be in Nebraska this weekend to see some of my extended family and attend the wedding of my cousin. Lucky for me (remember how much I love the heat of summer) it will be in the 90s all weekend long in Nebraska with I'm sure tons of humidity!!! Thankfully football season hasn't quite started, otherwise I might have to start something in the Lincoln area to show them who's winning the Big 12 North this year! GO CLONES!!!

So with that explanation, I bid you all well. As for me... I have to finish packing this morning and hit the road!! Most important thing is all ready to go - THE TUNES!!!

Keep the peace, and don't kill your roommate before I get back to Rochester!!

756

So of course I'm flipping through the channels last night. I see "Barry Bonds is coming up, batting 2nd, at the bottom of the inning"... I continue to flip.... I see the NEW Family Feud with Al from Home Improvement. Does anybody know his real name ever? The question was "Name a dog breed that starts with C". Top 4 answers on the board. They got Chow Chow (which I would imagine encompasses all versions of Chow that are out there.... got ya covered Girby) and Chihuahua. So then there are two left (#1 and #3 for the record). I immediately thought of Ginger the Wonder Cocker Spaniel.... that's a "C". Oh yeah, and a Collie.... duh - one of those has to be #1. But I know that people say and do weird things under pressure.... so the first guess by the team was a lady who couldn't think of anything and luckily didn't say anything. Then the next lady guessed "Cougar". Ok, so technically that does start with a "C" but also technically... THAT'S NOT A DOG!!!! Of course that was strike 2. BUT that wasn't even the worst guess given by the team. The biggest guy on the team was next and he politely asks for clarification. And I quote "How about a Chow Mein... is that a type of Chow"..... you know the comedian who has the whole "here's your sign" routine? This would be quite the appropriate place for one. Hopefully my millions (AND MILLIONS) of readers realize that "Chow Mein" is not a dog but indeed a Chinese dish made up of stir-fried noodles. I see how one could get confused between a dog breed and something you order from China Star that is ready in 5-10 minutes. Of course the judges were not very forgiving and buzzed him for being stupid. The other team did steal with their Cocker-Spaniel answer. Funny part was they went to a sudden death tie break.... top ONE answer on the board - Name a place that requires security screening. And the same guy who asked if Chow Mein was a type of dog correctly rang in and answered "Airport". Game, Set, Match.

Oh yeah, Barry is up!! Flip back to ESPN2 (or any other ESPN network since they continue to stop everything for Barry's plate appearances). 3-2 count, nobody on. Good timing as the next pitch was hit out of the park. The best part was watching the mad scuffle in the stands for the $400,000 gift! Random people jumping on the pile (looked like a mosh pit of sorts) and who comes up with the ball? A FRIGGIN' METS FAN!!! As he's escorted out by the security-rent a cops.... Barry circles the bases, the game is stopped... fireworks, message from Hank Aaron (the non-juiced King), Willie Mays was walking around carrying the microphone.... oh yeah, San Fran ended up losing the game.

Back to Family Feud... no longer on:( Oh well - both events were worth a good laugh!

The times are up from Saturday's run.... although pretty raw form, not sure why they went with this weird format. First place came in at 15:50 at a 5:06 pace! There are 4 pages of results but you only have to go to PAGE 3 to find me!!! Check out 139th and look at that awesome sub 30 minute time I posted! HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES!?!?!?! Also note I was the last sub-30 minute time in the entire race! I should get an award for that! Anyway... I did try to catch "Jamie Christy" but she seemed to speed up too at the end. Don't remember her being 5 seconds in front of me but whatever. I can handle 139 out of 184!

So that's my ramblings for the day. Nebraska, HERE I COME!!!

Entertainment of the Day - Thanks to the recommendation by North Carolina Adam, I watched the rest of Shooter with Marky Mark (no Funky Bunch) and Dennis Glover. It's kind of like a Bourne movie with Dirk Diggler running around with a gun..... NOT THAT GUN, a pistol. Well.. not THAT pistol, nevermind. Pretty good movie, don't watch it if you just saw the new Bourne movie, wait a week before jumping in the pool.

Your Rocky Guide

I saw that Rocky III was on this past weekend. I watched long enough to hear Eye of the Tiger (as well as the literal reference from Apollo... "you have to have the eye of the tiger Rock") and then went on to better things.

But then I started thinking, which one is the third one? Is that the one where he rematches Mr. T but then wrestles Hulk Hogan? Russian was 4? Too many questions so I present a quick guide to the Rocky movies so you won't have to go back and watch them all:

Rocky (1977) - Won 3 Oscars (Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Picture). Rocky is a nobody, trains with Mickey (the one from the 7-up cartoons), falls in love with Adrian (Rocky's BFF Paulie's little sister). Rocky gets setup as a nobody to fight the Undefeated Heavyweight Champ: Apollo Creed. 15 rounds of whaling around later, Apollo wins by split decision but Rocky wins the heart of Adrian.... Awwwww....

Rocky II (1979) - First 20 minutes are a repeat of the final 20 minutes of the first flick (used in Godfather 2 as well as Friday the 13th Part 2. Rocky gets Adrian knocked up and Rock retires (common theme in all the movies). Apollo talks some more trash and demands a rematch but it takes Adrian coming out of her coma (occurred at the birth of their son) to say "win one for the gipper" for Rocky to fight again. This is where he trains in Philadelphia with all the people chasing him. Another 15 round fight, both fighters go down, Rocky makes it up on count 9 (just like in the WWF!). We all go home with a wonderful feeling in our hearts.

Rocky III (1982) - What did you people do from 1979-1982 without knowing what was going to happen to Rocky? By now Rock is still champion, but look out for Seargant Baracus - MR. T!!! Rocky makes good with his BFF Paulie and even hires him to help out around the house. Charity match against Hulk Hogan, then Rocky gets his ass kicked by Clubber (Mr. T) in round 2. Oh yeah, Mr. T gives Mick a heart attack punch which turns out kills him. Rocky goes to LA to train with Creed (his new BFF). He rematches and beets Clubber in 3 rounds since he's better "conditioned". At the end, Rocky and Apollo are holding hands sharing a diet Fresca... right before they kiss, the movie freezes and ends.

Rocky IV (1985) - BFF Creed goes to fight the Big Russian "Drago" (Dolph Lundgren - who also played He-Man in the movie). Rocky sits in Apollo's corner but doesn't throw in the towel which leads to Creed getting killed. No, as in needs a funeral, not figuratively! Rocky goes to train in the woods by chopping wood which Drago just uses steroids (works for baseball! Why not boxing?). Christmas in Moscow, Rocky goes YET again for 15 rounds.... finally knocks the Russian down in the end. Rocky turns diplomat and asks for an end to the coldwater. I think his line was "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" or something like that.

Rocky V (1990) - Rocky's now bankrupt (a realistic element to the boxing world) and comes home to his family having returned to the old neighborhood. He is hired to help train an up-and-coming boxer, Tommy Gunn. Tommy ditches Rocky when Rock talks about heart instead of about $$$! Tommy goes to win the title with Don King-ish guy, only to have Rocky still be the "people's champ". He goes to challenge Rocky in a street fight but that's not smart as the 60 year old Rocky kicks his butt and embarrasses him out in the back yard. Thanks to the ghost of Mickey!

Rocky Balboa (2006) - A 120 year old Rocky has to deal with no Adrian, and a son who's basically distanced himself. Rocky is a restaurant owner now and runs across Marie who was a friend from the past. ESPN starts doing their "what if" virtual matchups and the current champ faces off against the Rocky of old only to lose to Rocky. This pisses him off so of course he wants to fight the old Rocky. Rocky goes the distance but again loses in a split decision. He's happy though and visits Adrian's grave only to say "we did it". Aww......

Entertainment of the Day - I watched an interesting movie this weekend that if you're into foreign films, you might like. The Page Turner is a French Flick and a Musical Thriller!!! Not often do you see those. Basically this young girl goes to a piano competition and in the middle of her audition one of the judges takes an autograph and distracts the young girl enough that she messes up miserably. So she gives up the piano and never wants to play again. As the girl gets to college age, luck brings her back to the judge and the family as first a nanny of the son, but also as a page turner for the judge that messed her up. She now has the opportunity to repay her (not to mention at times looks like she can do physical harm to the son). There's actually a couple of scenes that were rather impressive for being a French movie.

Weblink of the Day - In honor of Bowling Season coming up very soon (yeah, it did just end).... I give you: Human Bowling. Think Slip and Slide with a bunch of pins at the other end! Could be a good tailgating idea Jill!!

30 Minutes....

What can you do in 30 minutes?

Watch your favorite Simpsons Episode? Well that's actually only 22 minutes or so, you're catching 8 minutes minimum of commercials. Or you can watch any of your favorite 1/2 hour sitcoms including the wasted time designed to brain wash you into buying some useless products.

Watch a half of football assuming the clock never stops. Since that never happens....

Probably takes you that long to get through security at the Vegas airport. Does for me every time I fly back from LV.

The flight from gate to gate for the Rochester-Minneapolis flight is around 30 minutes if I remember correctly. Yeah, they don't even bother serving beverages or tell you to get up and walk around the cabin it's such a short flight. By the time you are in the air, it's already time to come back down.

Well on Saturday, 30 minutes was the amount of time it took me (almost exactly) to run my very first 5k run here in Rochester. Yeah, in the pouring rain Saturday morning, I ran one and a half laps around Silver lake starting on 7th street. There were probably 150 runners and maybe 50 walkers..... I ran the first 2+ mile lap with no problems - followed a high school group of about 8 runners that seemed to have a steady pace. We all started together so I wasn't able to feel like I hit my "stride" for the first 1/4 mile or so. It's nothing compared to the mess of runners at the NYC Marathon where it takes you 3-4 minutes just to hit the starting line!

There was one hill on the last mile that I had to walk briskly up the 2nd time... I'm not proud of it, but knowing that I finished at my 30 minute goal just means my pace was a little faster than I was planning on. So my major goal for this summer is off of my list. For next summer, I'd like to do a 10k run. I might throw another 5k in this year, but I want to wait till the weather cools off (and I drop some more weight).

I also broke even over all as I won a door prize in a $10 gift card to ColdStone. So $10 to run the race, came home with $10 GC. But it's like golf - why should you have to pay to do something so painful? I would think they should pay me to run!

Entertainment of the Day - I was able to catch up on a lot of movies this weekend. First up for today is Premonition with Sandra Bullock. It was an unusual plot but one that I kind of enjoyed. I didn't especially care for how it ended but oh well - not my call. Worth a viewing someday if you haven't already. Listed as a "thriller" for those of you who don't particularly like scary movies.

Finally Friday!

It's Fair Day here in Rochester. Hopefully nice weather for those that have the desire to go to the county fair. Me? I have too much crap to catch up on so I'm going to head home to work from there all afternoon.

Only a couple of thoughts to share on this Friday:

My golf was ok last night - not as well as I was hoping it'd be, but still improving week to week. Just in time for the end of the season!!!

When we were at post-golf last night, the XGames was on. And THIS INCREDIBLE DROP from 50 feet up the half-pipe came over the tube. I thought the guy was dead. Miraculously they're saying he hasn't broken anything. Amazing amazing.....

As much as I hate the continual focus on Barry Bonds (with additional minute to minute updates on A-rod and Glavine which are equally as annoying) until he breaks the Home Run record. And how the subject is "tearing everyone apart"!! Whatever. BUT I do think there's an interesting match up tonight with Greg Maddux (my favorite pitcher of my lifetime) going against Barry. Maddux (who doubles as Matthew Broderick in the off season.... have they actually been proven to be two different people?) had some great comments regarding the "record breaking pitch" and he said basically it's not too hard to throw 4 balls outside the zone to not give up the magical hit.

And my front headlight went out recently. Tried to see how hard it is to change a front bulb and WHAT A PAIN IN THE ASS!!!! I have no intention on paying some auto shop money to change the light bulb.

Anyway - have a good weekend y'all!!

Another Bad Day in Minnesota

So of course the big news of the day is the I35 Bridge falling down. Pretty scary to think what could have happened. I'm still praying for those that were hurt and the families of the few that were lost - but I'm thankful that it wasn't worse. I think I've been on that bridge maybe 2 times... usually once I make it to the city, i have no reason to keep going north on 35. It'll be interesting to see how the metropolis deals with the break in major artery into the city.

But what I did want to comment on (since a lot of facts are still unknown at this point) - is the difference in news coverage last night. We had the luxury of having local news station on the spot since half my channels come from Minneapolis. Plus you feel the personal element when the people reporting are residents of that area. Unlike the national folks flown in just to get the story. But as I flipped through the news stations last night - you had Anderson Cooper (who I don't usually mind, just a little over dramatic at times.... like the Tom Cruise of news) who was interviewing people and showing footage from cell phone cameras (I swear one guy had 20 minutes of footage from his cell phone... should have said the brand and company's name and turned that into a sponsorship!!). Luckily most of the folks interviewed I felt represented Minneapolis and Minnesota well. Halfway intelligent folks giving honest testimony.

Then I switched the channel to Fox News and all the "intelligent folks" disappeared. Seriously - I hate that channel anyway, but was curious what they were covering. It was just a totally different tactic on "reporting". They felt the need to scare the sh!t out of everyone stating how this could happen to anyone and basically encouraged the Terrorist Threat Level to go to a higher level. One news lady has family in the city and tried to relate to everyone telling us that her family goes over that bridge all the time. Sorry, I just hate Fox News and the fear effect that they constantly try to convey. I don't even consider that channel "real news" anymore.

Other non-Bridge news..... golf league tonight and for the first time all summer, I'm excited to play tonight. Been playing a lot better lately and hitting the ball much much better, so we'll see if it actually shows in my final score. Plus there's only a few weeks of league left so enjoy it while it lasts. Just wish it wasn't going to be so stinkin' hot!!

We are 4 weeks exactly from KICK OFF!!!!!

Haiku of the Day
News should be just facts,
Not so much speculation!
Don't care what you "think".

Entertainment of the Day - I was back in a classical mode this week. Been listening to The Magic Flute by Mozart (in German). Probably one of the easier "first" operas for anyone that is curious about opera or for anyone wanting to go with a very hesitant spouse. It's funny and very light compared to other operas. Just one man's opinion.

Weblink of the Day - 59 of the coolest toilet signs... pretty funny and cool! The Ken and Barbie are my favorite!

All Sorts of Webpages

So not everyone has as much time (or desire) to surf the web as much as I probably do... so here are some things I've noticed as of late that may (or may not) interest you:
  • So back to this movie trailer from Transformers that has a very strong internet rumor mill churn at the moment.... it's the one that said 1-18-08 and looked kind of like a Godzilla movie. I got caught up on the latest pictures posted at the webpage. If you snag the party pictures and move the mouse back and forth quickly, the photos FLIP OVER. Some have messages. Also, all the characters have myspace pages with other clues. So yeah, if you have the desire to get caught up in this impressive mystery - go to "Untitled JJ Abrams Project" on IMDB and follow the message board at the bottom. Yes, it's addictive - but hopefully we'll figure out everything before too long.
  • And if you want something else to laugh at - check out Paris Hilton's new movie musical that she will be in about Organ-Harvisting?!?!?!? Seriously - WHAT THE......
  • Simpsons Movie did well - and here are 23 sports stars who have made cameos in a Simpsons episode at one point.
  • Just for the heck of it - two cute bunnies that put Frank to shame....
  • Steven Colbert broke his wrist... best part is he showed us how he did it!. Proof that carma does exist!
