TGIF

Not a lot of time today - It's Reorg Day here at work!

Sad news in the musical world as Rostropovich died this morning. He was an incredible cellist who not only changed the world by how he played, but also how he dealt with the changing government of the Soviets/Russian areas. He was the one who played the Bach Cello Suites in the shadow of the Berlin Wall was being torn down. He studied with Shostokovich and Prokofiev and many famous 20th century cello concertos were written FOR him. He was basically the inheritor of "best cellist" title after Pablo Casals died (which is probably now with Yo-Yo Ma).

I did get to see Rostropovich perform about 6 years ago while I was out east. I went to a concert in the summer at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony Orchestra who performed Don Quixote by Strauss with Rostropovich playing cello. Can't remember who played the viola part but does it matter?

Anyway - hope everyone has a good weekend!
